I supervised my 7-year-old while he constructed this toy.

Overall, it took about 4-5 hours; there's about 500 bits to it. The manual is completely pictorial and can be understood quite easily, although at times the coonstruction needed close supervising, as it's quite complicated for a complete novice.

Having said that, we completed it with no problems. It could be made a lot more quickly, but I wanted to make sure that he did it all himself. The structure of the ship when completed is not very tough - there are weak points that will easily fall apart if put under any pressure, although it would be easy enough to rebuild them.

The ship fires a spring-loaded rocket - a definite plus as far as my son was concerned. I don't recognise the vessel from any film, but this might be because it's from 'The Clone Wars' which is an animated film I have yet to see.

All in all, recommended - don't be put off by the complexity, as it's all very wel explained in the manual.

I have yet to acclimatise to the price of Lego toys, and the yellow colour is a bit unusual, so this only gets 4 stars from me. (I'd like to give it 3.5 if I could).

EDIT 20th October: He hasn't touched it for a couple of weeks now; they say the pleasure is in the construction though...

My son actually went online to put this set in his wish list! This is a true winner to give to any serious Lego brickmaster who knows ins and outs of star wars and have many other sets before. This LEGO set contains 568 pieces and includes 3 popular minifigures: Anakin Akywalker, Ahsoka and R2-D2. Compared to the other two star war sets my son built before(8039 and 7675), this set takes much less time to build, has brighter color (yellow as opposed to classic grey and red) and looks really great once it is built. Other fun features include a firing missle and a secret storage compartment to store lightsabers.

Lego continue their Clone Wars releases in 2009 with set 8037: Anakin's Y-Wing Starfighter which is a great model of the Koensayr Manufacturing BTL-B Y-Wing Starfighter first seen in the Clone Wars episode 'Shadow Of Malevolence'.
The fighter features an opening front cockpit, angling control panel in main cockpit, rear gunner station, postionable upper cannons, droid compartment for R2-D2, opening aft compartment to store lightsabres and a missile launcher in the lower hull.
The missiles is one of the rubber tipped missiles with launcher - the same type as found in 2008's 7675 AT-TE Walker. However, through an extension mechanism the firing control comes out in the droid compartment. You place R2 on the firing stud and by pushing him towards the aft, the missile fires.
You get three figures with the kit. The first two are reissues, the Clone Wars Anakin and Ahsoka, both armed with their trademark lightsabres. R2-D2 is a new figure and now sports a grey dome (like the one in 2008's 10188 Death Star) but he has Clone Wars style decals on his body and dome.
The Y-Wing is 42.5 cm long (from forward gun tip to aft thruster vectral), 18.5 cm wide (from port to starboard engine) and 8.5 cm tall (from base to top of gunner station dome).
The kit comprises 555 pieces (not including figures, weapons and missile), there are 2 decals to apply and construction time is about 30 minutes.
A brilliant starfighter and a must have for any Republic Army.

Bought this for my Star Wars Lego obsessed son (4 and a half) and although it was too complicated for him to build independantly (it is aimed at 8+ year olds)he didn't care too much once it was built. Absolutely fabulous, and great value for money.

Y-wing? Because it is excellent! Even fires a missile! Well worth getting if Lego and Star Wars are loved by the child you're considering for.

Lego's are always great for educational teachings. Kids have to follow instructions and check and double check their work for accuracy. Super fast/reliable delivery.
