With over 1000 pieces to construct your choice of 3 vehicle combinations, this is serious Lego for older and more dedicated child constructors, who may (particularly at the younger end of the recommended age spectrum) need some support in producing their desired models. In view of the number of pieces involved, some form of sorting tray is to be recommended.
As usual for Lego, the construction pieces are well made and click together to form strong joints (just as well, considering the intricacy of the building task involved!) with highly useable end results. If looked after carefully, I can't see any reason why this toy shouldn't last for many years. The box could, perhaps, be clearer in showing that although it is possible to build 3 different vehicle models using the components supplied, it is only one of these that can be constructed at any one time.
The selection of vehicles is really popular with after school club kids - though be warned, if you're buying this set for more than one child to complete, you may find some disagreements as to whether the pickup truck with a trailer and quad bike, the dune buggy, or the flat bed truck loaded with a digger should be the first design project. I suspect that we're not going to see the dune buggy many times, as the best compromises seem to involve the pickup truck + quad bike or the flatbed truck + digger: hooray for the fact that these both generate 2 vehicles in one! The winch is also a big hit.

LEGO has definitely grown up since I was a youngster. With kits like this, instead of a limited range of indeterminate components, you get something more like a complex 3D jigsaw. The suggested age-limits for this one are probably about right, it's challenging enough to keep an older child interested without being frustratingly difficult or childishly simple. It comes complete with illustrated (wordless) step-by-step instruction manuals, one for each of the three models this kit makes and you'll probably need them first time out.
Some people might argue that standard LEGO kits engage a child's imagination more but that's probably unfair. Once a child has made the suggested models (and it'll take them a while) there's nothing to prevent rebuilding them 'Transformer-style' into near-endless variations - certainly nothing's stopped my nephew from doing that. The winch is a great feature, even better for not requiring batteries. The kit's not exactly cheap but it's as much fun as it ever was and it's nice to know that hasn't changed.

I had a lot of fun with this, because at 34, this took me right back to childhood, and all the Technic Lego sets that used to litter my playroom.
Some of the bits and pieces have become a little more sophisticated in the last 20 years or so, but the basic principles are the same, with the same crisp, clear instructions. As a Lego veteran, it all seemed fairly easy to follow, but I'm sure a 9 year old could manage too, with a bit of concentration.
My kids are still at the Duplo stage, so they weren't really interested in this - mainly because there are no people included. But that's never really been the point of these sets; it's all about the simple pleasure of building something mechanical and seeing the various cogs and levers interact.
Hard to fault Lego really; it's indestructible, timeless and educational. Some of the sets these days are certainly not cheap, but for countless hours of building and rebuilding, it's a pretty good investment.
