Book Description

This is the first book to examine the history of dissident Irish republicanism as it has developed over the last two decades. It does so by putting dissident republicanism in historical context and then exploring its evolution particularly against the background of the Northern Irish peace process and Good Friday Agreement. This book shows why the flame of militant, violent Irish republicanism still burns by taking an indepth look at the thinking that inspires those who adhere to its ideology. To this end the author has conducted interviews with members from the political wings of several leading dissident groups.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read....... 11 Nov 2011

I only wish I could give this book 10 stars. Martyn Frampton has exhaustively researched the origins, politics, activities, splits and leadership changes of the RIRA, CIRA, 32CSM, eirgi, RSF, ONH and RNU. He has laid bare the reasoning behind certain actions, inactions, policy changes and capitulation to the Unionists by the PIRA and Sinn Fein which resulted in what must have been a heart wrenching decision by some Volunteers, members and supporters to leave the PIRA, Sinn Fein and the Republican movement. I now more fully understand their reasoning behind forming the above groups and why they feel it is necessary to arm themselves. Over the last several years I have become more disillusioned with the lack of political gains by Sinn Fein, i.e. you mean to tell me that the Orange Order can STILL march in Nationalist/Republican neighborhoods ??
I no longer support the use of violence, but those who choose to ignore the environments which create the breeding grounds for social unrest and its eventual path to armed struggle, do so at their own peril.

Mr Frampton is not only a good researcher and historian; he has taken his research and created a book which is comprehensive and thought-provoking. Mr Frampton has crafted a must read.
This book is not for the uninitiated or casual reader.
