Product Description

Synopsis

This is an exciting look at some of the greatest names in Irish boxing. All your favourite Irish glovemen are here from Barry McGuigan, Wayne McCullough and 'Dave Boy' McAuley to older heroes such as Freddie Gilroy, Charlie Nash and John Caldwell. Many of Ireland's boxers came from deprived backgrounds where sport really did offer an escape route away from the Troubles or poverty to wealth, travel and sometimes celebrity. Almost all the boxers in this book represented Ireland and Northern Ireland at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and brought home medals. For some this would be the pinnacle of their success but for others the adventure was just beginning. To paraphrase Simon and Garfunkel's song - 'The Boxer' - these are their 'stories seldom told'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Legends of Irish Boxing, 19 Aug 2008

Great - absolutely great. About time that the history of the 'fighting Irish' was recorded. Flynn's insights are excellent and will be a brilliant reference book for future generations. I think the reviewer that gave the book 2 out of 5 was a bit 'hard' methinks - especially as he based it on a spelling mistake!

If you followed Irish boxing - amateur or pro - anytime from the 1950s onwards this book is well worth getting. It's fascinating to see many of the "How they look now" photos of boxers I haven't seen since they were in their teens/twenties, and equally interesting to read how their lives unfolded after they stopped boxing.

My only quibble would be a few minor errors (e.g. Joe "Frasier" rather than "Frazier", and one or two small points of historical detail). I'd love to see a Part 2 featuring some of the other great Irish boxers who didn't win World Titles or fight at the Olympics (this book is focused on the ones who attained those levels)...I'd like to read about guys like Billy Kelly, Young McCormack, Gus Farrell, Jim Neill. etc in a Part 2.

Overall, a good read....I started at 7pm and was still going strong at midnight.... and back to it tonight!
