US Cavalry officer Colonel William Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins) takes early retirement after despairing of the Government's treatment of the Western Tribes. In the remote foothills of the Montana Rockies he builds a ranch where he brings up his three sons. When the youngest son Samuel (Henry Thomas) returns from the city with beautiful fiancée Susannah (Julia Ormond), she attracts the admiration of Alfred and Tristan, his two brothers (Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn). After one of their number is lost in the First World War, the surviving sons return home to rebuild their lives - and fight once more for Susannah's love.

This has got to be one of the best love stories I have ever seen. Heart-wrenching to say the least. Perfect cast, perfect look and a beatifully written storyline that doesn't allow you to leave it without that deep throb in your heart.
Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt have such a rapport and it's so pleasing to see them bouncing off eachother with their unique acting skills. You leave the film not believing that it wasn't real or at least based on a true story...the mark of a true classic!
Something I haven't seen mentioned here (forgive me if I'm wrong, of course) is the music in the film...the score is a masterpiece and some of the best classical music I have ever heard. It no doubt makes the movie what it is and it could not have been the same without it. If this is your thing then I also suggest buying the soundtrack - it takes you to so many places and is well worth having in your collection if you fancy a 'Ludlow' moment or just want to relax. It deserves to be heard on it's own as it raises so many feelings of your own - not just that of the film.
I hope this has been helpful. I can't begin to tell you how happy I am to have found this movie - it's definitely a 'can't stop watching' film.

Surprised myself at enjoying this film so much. This is a film for both men and women, very gritty, historical, interesting, action packed yet with an underlying love story running through the whole film. Anthony Hopkins is superb and the young Brad Pitt is exceptional, with a very moving performance.
Suitable for ages 15 and over, in my opinion, the film combines some history of the native American Indians,the second world war and all its repercussions and a love story which affects a whole family. Brilliantly narrated throughout, great cinematic photography and good dialogue. A classic film which you want to watch again.

This is a very heart warming movie, a lot of quality actors, (a very sexy Brad pitt with long hair), sibling rivilary, unrequited love, the heartbreak, reality, terror, and struggle of war alongside, life and love hardships. Not an action movie, but one for both sexes. Definitely worth a view!!
