Now that I live in Tokyo, I'm a bit spoiled... you go into a record store, and sitting on the shelf - - well, take just the other day - - I picked up a vinyl reissue of Joe Jones's Boogaloo Joe (the album from which many of these tracks come.) - - For some reason, you just don't find groovy stuff like this on CD/record store shelves back in the states, and its a shame. - - If you're a fan of that late '60s BLUE NOTE/Prestige Funk... and like cats like MELVIN SPARKS and Grant Green's later funk flirtations, this CD is made to order. - - Also a nice treat - - a right on red hot finger popping Bernard Purdie on drums, Sonny Phillips on organ and RUSTY BRYANT (If you ever can get your hands on an album called NIGHT TRAIN NOW, go for it !) - - Calling Joe Jones a legend of acid Jazz may or may not be a hip marketing cliche... but whether it is or isn't, book its probably an understatement. For some reason he is often criticised as underplaying (leaving the work to his sidemen) - - however, a quick listen to "Boogaloo Joe" should pretty much clear up any doubts as to weather or not the guy can get a groove on... Yip, go out and get this one !
