Having bought the Keb Darge and Paul Weller Lost and Found, and based on the previous review, decided to take a leap and purchase this CD. Apart from the Big Mama Thornton stomper which I already had, the other tracks were new to me, although some of the artists werent.
This CD is fantastic and not one slow, ballad in sight. From the opening track of Harold Jackson to the closing track of Lonesome Lee, all of the tracks are truly rockin. A few of the tracks ride that fine line between Rockabilly / Rock N Roll and R&B, more tracks towards the R&B side with a few with a hint of Little Richard wailing, but on the whole the more times I play the more times i enjoy each track. Definately play loud!
The Big Mama track alone is enoough to buy this CD, New Breed indeed. Artie Wilson and Tarzan takes a bit of getting used with his Tarzan calls , but still a great track.
Definately on a par with the Lost And Found Keb did with Paul Weller
My only negative point against the whole CD was the Gatefold Digipack sleeve it came in, i prefer plastic cases with a detailed liner booklet about the artists, and although Kebs view is you can go and find out about the artists on the Internet, for the enjoyment of the listener and purchaser some of us dont have time to go searching for 20+ artists, but probably have 10 minutes to read liner notes when listening to the CD for the first.
Cant deny the music is great and probably worth 10 times the value of the CD, but next time Keb (BBE), some liner notes and a plastic case please.
This is definately worth the purchase if you like 50s and early 60s R&B.
