Though Otis Blackwell made a handful of singles from 1952-56 for labels like RCA,Jay Dee,MGM and Atlantic none of them troubled a chart.Blackwell became famous for hit songs for others.
At 3 years older than Elvis it was Don't be cruel-the B side of Hound Dog-the name appeared in the credits alongside "Presley" though they never even met.
It was no more than a ploy by the Colonel to get a share of the song.
He was then on a roll with songs for Jerry Lee Lewis,Johnny Restivo,Dee Clark,Roy Hamilton and more songs for Elvis.
With Handy Man it was a case of a song already written and recorded by Jimmy Jones while he was a Pretender-no doubt just altering a line or two.
He had problems with the IRS chasing him for money-which is why he became John Davenport who was a relation.
There were more singles in other decades but all those past hits were being revived every other year
Today there are at least 6 CDs of his work but this one is later reconstructions rather than the original demo versions. It sounds more Muscle Shoals than 50s rock'n'roll. The songs are now comparable to how Billy Swann would have done them
Included on this CD are 2 of Blackwell's demos made for Paralysed and a song for Fats Domino-Heartbreak Hill. And to show how times have changed a line in Paralysed seems quite amusing:
"I'm singing every morning at night I feel so gay..."
