Lee Wiley was an early song stylist whose records repay repeated listening, by virtue of both her expressive smoky contralto voice, and of the excellence of her accompaniments. Tracks 1 to 3 are with Leo Reisman, track 4 with Victor Young, track 5 piano, tracks 6 to 11 Dorsey Brothers Orch, track 12 Glen Gray & the Casa Loma Orch, tracks 13 & 14 Johnny Green & his Orch, tracks 15 & 16 studio orch, tracks 17 to 20 Victor Young, tracks 21 & 22, Dorsey Bros. Orch. Four of these titles were never issued on 78, and given that this is her complete recorded output over a period of seven years one can only lament the lost opportunities that represents. This is a gem, and it's accompanied by an excellent liner note.

Good quality early compilation for a surprisingly underrated jazz chanteuse.

If you've recently discovered the great songwriting talents of one man bandster R Stevie Moore, its hard to know where to start to check through his back catalogue.
After all, he's been making muisc for over 30 years.
Well this is one of the best places to start.
Made in the late 1980s, this was actually made in a studio rather than his bedroom. Luckily this was a time when he was producing some great catchy tunes such as All Well and Good, Blues for Cathy Taylor, I Love You Too Much to Bother You, Hobbies Galore, No Know - which really benefit from some nice production. Add in his playful collection of Sequitur's and cover of Who Killed Davey Moore, this album captures most of what's best about Moore. There's a couple of tracks that have never grabbed me but I think every R Stevie release is like that - his high moments are worth it.
Have a look at You Tube as well - he played a lot on a US cable channel - not always too dignified but I'm sure he knew what he was doing.
