Review

John Deere entered the tractor market in 1918 when it bought out the grandly-titled Waterloo Gasoline Traction Company. And in that same year, the company sold over 5,500 machines - launching the first John Deere-branded tractor in 1923 and laying the foundations for a further 80 years of progress and solid success. With over 500 photographs by Andrew Moreland - one of the most experinecd tractor photographers at work today - this fine, colourful edition offers readers and enthusiasts a pageant of machinery and a fascinating year-by-year glimpse of the mechanical evolution. From the model D Spoker to the curves and fin-like styling of the 1967 Model 2020 Orchard, John Deere could always be relyed on to produce an eye-catching model. One of my favourite pictures from Mr Morelands collection is the 1929 Model GP - a rare side-steer tricycle which was one of only 23 built between 1929 and 1930.Each page comes with useful, to-the-point information - with notes on everything from horse power to transmission; from cuircuits to Quick Coupler options. The penultimate chapter is entitles 'New power and the modern era' - taking the book into the realms of the mighty 8530 - a 330hp giant and a true heir to the fine examples of early engineering form the last part of the last century. --Tractor and Machinery magazine, October 2008

This is a coffe-table style publication packed with colour photos of everything from a Waterloo Boy of 1920 to the model 8530 of 2007 which looks more like a space command module than a tractor because of the angle from which it is pictured. It is this seeking out of unusual angles and interesting settings that set this book apart; often the tractors are photographed at work and, where they are not, they are al least in their local agricultural setting. Mostly they are in American, but a chapter entitles 'The Overseas Connection' does bring the cameraman to Europe to picture Lanz models and (possibly) to Australia to view some Chamberlains. Text is kept to a minimum - you learn enough to understand why the photo is in the book; this is a feast for the eyes rather than the brain. --Tractor and Machinery, April 2009

John Deere Tractors: A Photographic History 16 Feb. 2010
By Victoria DeWald - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I purchased this book for my husband as a Christmas gift. He is an avid John Deere individual and enjoys all types of John Deere memorabilia. He found great joy in the colorful, clear photos of the tractors he knew and used that were included in this book. He has shared it with several of his fellow "John Deere" friends.

Legendary JD Tractors by Andrew Morland 3 May 2008
By S. Young - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Covers a wide range of JD tractor history in color photography. Disappointed in the 4020 models as only a High Crop LP and a High Crop Diesel were pictured. No 4010 tractors were pictured.
