More About the Author

Called 'The Indiana Jones of Gnosis', Judith Mann is an intrepid traveler/photographer/writer, spending much of her productive life investigating the sacred in Europe and South East Asia.

Five prior trips to Europe and Armenia led Mann to writing and publishing 'The Trail of Gnosis', a book that focuses primarily on medieval Gnostics, the Cathars, gnostic background, beliefs, symbols and sacred destinations in France, Spain, Bosnia and Armenia. Pacific Rim Press has published the revised 4th edition of 'The Trail of Gnosis' in July, 2012.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read 17 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was interesting and clearly written. It made sense of the complex beliefs which the Cathars held and set them into their historical context. My only complaint was that it was too short; I would have liked some more detail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Legend? 19 Jun 2014

It left me wanting more. Whether Miss Mann did it on purpose, I don't know. I felt the pamphlet left a lot more questions than answers. A good ploy for sales of her other works.

1.0 out of 5 stars Legend of the Cathars 18 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The book was interesting but more of a pamphlet than a book. It was vastly overpriced for what it was. If the price had of matched the size of the book I would have been likely to try other books

5.0 out of 5 stars A general overview of the Cathars of France 26 April 2013
By Kristine McCaffrey - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This is not a book in the traditional sense but rather a short treatise on the Cathars, an early sect of Gnosticism, who lived in southern France 900 years ago. Ms. Mann describes the doctrines and beliefs of the Cathars, taken from the Gospel according to John, which include the idea of Duality (the difference between objective and subjective reality) and Man's 3 natures (the body, abode of the soul; the soul, abode of the spirit; the spirit, the divine spark). The Roman Catholic Church branded the Cathars heretics, threatened by their spirit of tolerance and personal liberty. The Cathars believed the approach to the Divine was an individual endeavor and not to be infringed upon by dogma or obedience. In 1244, 205 Cathars were burned alive in Montsegur, effectively ending their reign.

Ms. Mann offers a wonderful overview of the Cathars as well as a bibliography for further reading.

Please note: I received a copy of this work in exchange for a review.

4.0 out of 5 stars A short, easy read. 25 Dec 2012
By Francene - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This short run-down of an ancient spiritual order turned out to be a perfect read during Christmas. Now days, Christmas has become a time to consider every physical comfort and desire rather than our spiritual nature. Of course, each of us possesses both. Judith Mann reminds us of self-sacrificing forbears who influenced earlier times. The book will not satisfy those readers looking for a plot to involve them in the present time, but will make them think.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great overview of the subject 23 Dec 2012
By David Wegenast - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This 'book' is more like an article about the Cathars, and is an excellent response to the question 'Who are the Cathars?'. The basic details of their place in history are capably presented, but the authority of the text is undercut by the lack of a thorough edit. Readers are liable to be confused by sentences with missing words, and the occurence of the word 'telluric' without explanation. A bibliography of books and articles for more information would be a welcome addition for readers who want to delve deeper, and I know that the author could easily provide these.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a book 26 Dec 2012

This is no more than an introductory research paper.  To call it a book is extremely misleading.  I give it a B-.
2.0 out of 5 stars too shallow 23 April 2014

Not a very in depth analysis of a very very complex period in the history, of Europe, Christianity, the inquisition
