Book Description

21 Nov 2013
BRIAN O DRISCOLL is one of the greatest outside centres in history, not just in Ireland, but throughout the world. He is Ireland s most capped player of all time and has led the team as captain in a staggering 83 tests, including leading Ireland to their first Grand Slam in 60 years when they won it in 2009. Voted Player of the Decade by Rugby World in 2010 Brian O Driscoll is, quite simply, the most celebrated player in the sport today. Ever since his first match for Leinster in 1999 he would go on to make his debut for Ireland that very same year O Driscoll has shown the explosive strength, poise and guile that has led him to the top of the game. Despite this, he has had his low moments, most notably when in 2005 he had to be carried off of the field in the opening minutes of the first test of the Lions tour of New Zealand after a spear tackle from Umaga and Mealamu. Fully updated to include Leinster s thrilling victory over Ulster in the 2012 Heineken Cup, his marriage to Threesome actress Amy Huberman, the birth of their first child, Sadie and the 2013 Lions tour, this is the definitive book on O Driscoll s career.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is proof that writing is a skill 26 Jan 2014
I was given this book as a Christmas present and was looking forward to reading it. I had previously been of the very lazy attitude that it can't be that difficult to be a writer, but having read this book I am a convert and full of admiration for authors who can present a well-researched, cogent and credible read. This book is none of these. At times I felt that I was stuck in Groundhog Day reading a seemingly endless series of match reports. I did wonder whether the primary source of research had been to cut and paste newspaper reports of each game, but dismissed this possibility on the grounds that the newspapers would probably have got their facts right. To cite a couple of examples, the book refers back to the moment when Martin Johnson has a line-out stolen on the 2001 Lions tour to Australia by the South Africans of all people. I had the good fortune to be at that game and didn't see any South Africans on the pitch. Subsequently there is a reference to a match against Australia on a tour of Argentina. There are a couple of times in the book where the quoted score during a match doesn't match the narrative, for example when an unconverted try and a penalty leaves Ireland on 10 points. These are really basic errors that suggest a lack of knowledge on the part of the author and thoroughly inadequate proof-reading - assorted grammatical errors are further evidence of this.

All in all, this was a massively disappointing read and it was with a considerable sense of relief that I finally finished it. It reflects very poorly on both the author and the publisher and performs a disservice to its subject matter (who I can only assume was not involved in its preparation and release). To anyone reading this before purchasing the book, I would strongly encourage you to spare yourself a tortuous experience!

4.0 out of 5 stars updated version of previous biography 17 Jan 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very interesting story of BO'D but a bit disappointing that it is a reprint of previous version, just updated to cover his wedding, birth of his daughter and finally being a member of a winning British Lions Side although not a member of the actual winning team!
