Product Description

The fourth in a series of premiere hardcover editions of Salvatore’s classic dark elf tales.

This new release of the classic R.A. Salvatore novel continues the classic tale of Salvatore’s signature dark elf character Drizzt Do’Urden™. Although this was the first title actually published about Drizzt, it has now been placed in its proper chronological order as fourth in the series. Each title in The Legend of Drizzt series showcases the classic dark elf novels in new, deluxe hardcover editions. Each title will feature all new cover art and new introductions written by those who have become familiar with Salvatore and Drizzt over the years.

AUTHOR BIO: R.A. Salvatore was born in Massachusetts in 1959 and still makes his home there. He has published numerous Forgotten Realms novels with Wizards of the Coast, Inc., most of which have been New York Times best-sellers. He is also known as the best-selling author of the Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones novelization from Del Rey.

Okay, there are good and bad review here, but few help one decide where in the series to start. I shall therefore answer the title of this review: begin with Homeland, Exile and Sojourn. Here's why.

While I agree that this is a good book, I can't really understand why it's SO highly rated by so many people. I am enjoying it a lot, but have found the characters less engaging than those in The Dark Elf trilogy.

Also, it's full of action, and a bit too much. You find yourself attached to few of the characters; had I started with this, I may not have gone on to read the others. It's not a book that makes me think "I have to read the others!!"; I want to read the others because I really enjoyed the previous trilogy.

Another reason to begin with The Dark Elf trilogy is because it introduces you properly to Drizzt, who acts as more of a side-character in this book; a shame, since he's one of the most interesting, but then I suppose this was the first book written, and he was written to be an extra. His character is also more admirable in The Dark Elf trilogy. I developed respect and love for him, but in this book he's - well - a tad bland.

But most importantly, almost all of The Dark Elf trilogy's plot is summarised in this book; the books wouldn't have worked as well had I known what was going to happen. That may cause you to ask "why bother to read them then?" My answer is for the character development, the detail, and the quality of the writing which is more developed, more engaging, and more enjoyable.

I know this focussed a lot on the trilogy that comes before this book chronologically, but I felt I wanted to say something different to what's been said in the reviews that have already been published on the page.

R.A. Salvatore started a tale with this book that I never imagined I would have the pleasure of experiencing. I am 26 and have loved Fantasy (AD&D) my entire life. The story that starts here and continues to this day in over ten glorious novels is overwhelming. Thank you Mr. Salvatore and please keep writing books about Drizzt, the drow, Regis, Wulfgar, The Dwarves and all the other characters you have created. they have made so many people awe struck by the storyline. Thank you, your characters and their tales will be in my heart and soul forever.

The Crystal Shard is the worst of the Dark Elf books (not including Passage to Dawn or The Silent Blade, I haven't read them yet) but it is still a excellent book. Truly a well written and although not a original storyline it has changed enough so that it isn't a spinoff. But you can see his not fully developed writing style is evident although by The Halfling's Gem it does get much better. I whole heartedly recommend this novel.

A bit overrated, I think...
I hate to say this, but R.A. Salvatore is really not a very good writer. When I was, oh, ten or twelve, I absolutely adored this stuff. Read more
