More About the Author

Shireen Smith is an expert brand lawyer who qualified as a solicitor over 25 years ago, and in 2005 founded Azrights, an Intellectual Property and Internet law firm specialising in online brand issues. Praised for the clarity of her advice, and the practical, commercial approach she takes to solving her client's problems, Shireen represents individuals, SMEs, and public companies with turnovers in the tens of millions. Her book Legally Branded gives SMEs access to legal insights typically reserved to the world's top brands.

Apart from prolific writing on her various blogs, Shireen's work has been published by the Society for Computers and Law, Caritas, Bloomsbury's QFinance, and in the recent Reputation Management: Building and Protecting Your Company's Profile in a Digital World. Shireen has chaired and been a regular speaker at conferences held by Central Law Training, run workshops at the British Library, and spoken at the LSE. She is also a member of the International Division of the Law Society, and sits on the Internet Committee of the International Trade Mark Association.

Shireen's interests are broad and varied, and though her focus lies firmly on intellectual property, the Internet, and branding, she previously qualified as a journalist, has raised two inspirational daughters, and lectured in business law. Having had an international upbringing, Shireen at one time even considered becoming a professional linguist, before deciding on a career as a lawyer.

After graduating in law from East Anglia University Shireen worked both in industry (at Coopers & Lybrand and Reuters) and in private practice (at Overbury, Steward and Eaton in Norwich, and Eversheds in London) handling commercial subjects like tax, employment law, media and technology law, before focusing on technology contracts and intellectual property during her 5 years in-house at Reuters. Having developed an interest in the field, Shireen completed a Masters degree in Intellectual Property Law at London University's Queen Mary and Westfield Commercial Law Unit in 1996, a foremost place to study the subject.

Shireen is interested in entrepreneurship, new technology and how the internet and social media are transforming the business landscape. She is also part owner of a digital media business with her husband, which focuses on online marketing and social media for professional services businesses.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'must-read' for all small business owners 19 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback
Shireen excels at making the complex simple. Intellectual property is a hugely complicated topic, but Shireen successfully distills it into bite size chunks that everyone can understand. Many entrepreneurs don't realise how vulnerable their brand can be if they don't take the appropriate steps to protect it, which is why I believe this is a must-read book for all business owners. For the price of a few cups of coffee you get thousands of pounds worth of legal advice. Get it today.

This book is a very practical guide to building and securing one of the most valuable assets your business can create ... a brand.

If you look at Google, Coke-a-Cola, Apple, Facebook, IBM, BMW and some of the other most respected businesses in the world, a huge percentage of their valuation is their brand. Imagine if 10 years into Google, they discovered that they couldn't legally or practically protect that brand; it could be a huge set back! It would be like spending years building a house on a block of land then discovering it isn't yours.

This book gives you the simple things to do now, so that you won't be caught out later. It's not academic in the way it's written and (unlike most legal books) it shows a deep understanding of the "real world" entrepreneurial process.

I was lucky enough to be at the book launch of this book and was blown away at how much support this book had from all angles. Small businesses were there, big businesses were there, start-ups and even academics were all there. Everyone was amazed at how this important topic isn't made more accessible... until now.

5.0 out of 5 stars REALLY Informative 22 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback
This book needs to be read by all small and medium sized businesses. Shireen rightly points out that the big companies have legal advice when deciding on a brand name but the smaller companies don't realise that this should be part of the initial brand decision. And therefore they run the risk of paying for a brand name, logo and marketing that turns out to useless and money thrown away. A qualified legal IP expert who has delivered their expertise and advice in an easy to read book. An essential read.

At last a book that takes you through the spider's web of intellectual Property, Trade Marks , Brand Protection, the laws on operation on the Internet and social Media. Shireen has made this subject understandable and in an easy-to-follow way - that leaves you with a clear route through. I would recommend that you read this book before you embark on your business, or as a fledgling entrepreneur or a seasoned business owner - who may think there is nothing new to learn. This book and the actions it recommends can save you a fortune in the long run. I have no hesitation in recommending this book- a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most useful books for SMEs today 20 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you think this is just a book about logos, copyright, IP, etc, think again. It's a whole lot more than that!

An expertly written and well laid out book which simplifies what is often considered to be a minefield of laws and regulation. There are no myths nor is there scaremongering. You'll find great advice which are frequently backed up with facts. (Something which can be lacking in many books nowadays.

To me, what makes this book totally deserve its 5 star rating is the author has a very good understanding and awareness of the worldwide web and so the potential implications branding has on the on-line also - when most of her competitors are still scratching their heads trying to figure out the internet.

If you're serious about business and protecting your brand and IP, read this book.
