The Legally Blonde London Cast Recording is mind-blowing! Sheridan Smith is utterly gorgeous and dominates the Show - of course she i s Elle Woods, so she just has to. But really, after seeing her seven times on stage at the Savoy Theatre I have to admit I love her Elle. Though Sheridan Smith is surely not the very best singer on earth, but altogether the way she sings is so catching and makes one fall in love with her. Moreover her acting is brilliant - but anyway ... this is just a CD ...
It is alive recording, so you have to reckon with sounds from the audience, but this doesn't really disturb but makes the whole feeling much better and vivid. Just in the end of the "Legally Blonde Remix" the clapping hands and shoutings from the auditory are a little bit too loud so that you barely can her the singers - or let's say not as good as you should to.
I prefer this Recording to the Broadway CD - especially because of the cast which I have seen several times, but compared to the Broadway recording there are less new parts which could have been put on this CD, just like the "Greek Chorus"-Part before "Positive", or "Scene of the Crime" or the "Omigod you Guys"-Reprise in Court. Though there are just very short parts they are real treasures for a Legally Blonde Fan.
But having a recording by you're favorite cast is fancy anyway.
Sheridan Smith - already discussed - is just terrific. The performance of Caroline Keiff as Vivienne is excellent as well. Her acting is just naturally and fits perfect for the role. Her vocal appearances are also gorgeous ("Legally Blonde Remix" "There! Right, there!"). I would admit she might not the best singer to be chosen for the role of Vivienne - but she can still handle this and blows the audience away - especially in the end of the "Legally Blonde Remix" - though of the also mentioned loud audience. She is the next highlight after Sheridan Smith. Duncan James's charming voice fits perfectly for the role of Warner, especially in "Serious". Alex Gaumond is one of the very highlights of the show, having one of my personal favorite male voices. He is just adorable. Jill Halfpenny's Paulette is both funny acting and good sining. Moreover remarkable are the marvellous performances of Ibinabo Jack as Pillar, Nadine Higgin as Judge and in other roles. Aoife Mulholland as Brooke is good but her understudy Tamara Wall seems to have even more than she has. Suzie McAdam as Enid and Andy Mace in different roles make the show sparkling as well as Amy Lennox as Margot and Susan McFadden as Serena.
Finally I can just say: Buy it! If you already have the Broadway Cast buy it as well. If you want to get a first impression and have not heard anything from Legally Blonde before buy the London Cast! For any lover and fan this is juts compulsory to buy it.
