Before i read this i re-read the previous two books to make sure "i was in the mood". i think in comparison to the first two books "Legacy of Kings" rattled along at a fair pace holding my attention throughout. On reflection, what stopped this getting 5 stars was that there seemed to be too much rattling along and not as much depth as the previous two books. Another 80/100 pages could have fleshed out the ending much better.
But still overall another cracking read from Celia!

Amazing Finale 6 Sep 2011
By Stefan Gore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Legacy of Kings is the final book in C.S. Friedman's Magister trilogy. Legacy picks up immediately following the events in "Wings of Wrath". King Salvatore is building his army to make a final stand against the Souleaters all the while trying to come to grips with his lyr blood and how that will affect his faith. Queen Gwynofar is racing against time to train as a guardian and decipher the series of events after her sacrifice on the Throne of Tears in order to unite the lyr bloodline in her son's army. The Witch Queen Sidera Aminestas and the Souleater queen are building a new empire and plan to loose their vengeance on the Magisters. Kamala is exploring her unique Magister abilities and still trying to fit into Magister society ruled solely by males. Colivar's past is finally revealed and he alone knows the origin of the Magisters and what this will mean in the battle to come.

My favorite part of this book and the entire series is the magic system. Unlike some series I have read where magic wielders draw from the elements, or study various arcane phases and formula, Friedman's system ups the ante a bit. How would you use magic if you had to draw from your own life force and could not replenish it, or on the flipside, if you could draw power from the soul of someone you had never met and when you used it up you simply moved on to another person? Each group is faced with different choices and their decisions shape their lives and the lives of others in dramatic ways.

There are many revelations in "Legacy" and all your questions are answered. There were many "ah ha" moments for me and several things I never saw coming. I love being surprised like that. I recommend re-reading Feast of Souls and Wings of Wrath before reading Legacy. You certainly do not have to nor will it detract from the amazing experience this book gives, but there are many things I did not catch in my initial reads of Feast and Wings and it made Legacy even more enjoyable.

I was fortunate enough to get an ARC copy of Legacy from the publisher. One final comment is on the cover art, it is absolutely stunning. I whole-heartedly give this book 5 stars and look forward to re reading the series and future books from Ms. Friedman.

superb quest fantasy 7 Sep 2011
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The Wrath of the Gods has imprisoned the Souleaters who devoured the life essences of mortals; causing the empires to dissolve into barbarism. In the present, a breach in the Wrath allows these monsters to return to the world they devastated forty generations ago. However, the Souleaters learned from the errors of their ancestors so these creatures are more cunning and smarter. Nobody knew they are back except for Witch Queen Siderea Aminestas who is linked to her Souleater queen.

The Witch-Queen Siderea intends to sue the Souleaters to destroy the Magister sorcerers who also use the life essence of mortals to fuel their magic. The former monk King Salvator Aurelius senses the Souleaters have entered his High Kingdom; he gets the queen killed, but knows the queen to the south still remains a major threat to all mortals.. Former enemies form an alliance to take down Siderea and her Souleater queen.

The Magister Trilogy (see Feast of Souls and Wings of Wrath) comes to a powerful glorious climax with all the major loose ends resolved while also revealing the origin of the Magisters. The story line of the Legacy of Kings is told from various viewpoints which enable the readers to get inside the heads of the different protagonists and antagonists without slowing down the tale. Filled with many twists, series fans will be shocked and enthralled with some of the subplot endings as C.S. Friedman provides a superb quest fantasy.

The war between reason and instinct. 14 Sep 2011
By Mary H - Published on Amazon.com

Legacy of Kings was exciting from beginning to the end. In my opinion, it was one of CS Friedman's better works. The writing was tight and flowed beautifully.

In Legacy of Kings, Colivar took center stage, which I thought was an interesting departure from the 1st two books, since those stories focused on Kamala's quest to become a Magister and the mystical powers of the Lyr. When I re-read the first two books, I realized that the trilogy was really about Colivar, CS Friedman gave hints throughout the 1st two books about Colivar's importance but she used Kamala as an indirect way to tell his story. In Legacy of Kings, Colivar's life tied all the story lines together and his inner turmoils and struggles were some of the best emotional writing I had the pleasure to read.

This series ended happily, which made sense to me because the winning side had the guy who gave birth to all their problems and would thus have a knowledge advantage over the enemy. The enemy was at the beginning stages of development and therefore could not fight an older, more cunning opponent.

Several well-developed characters were sacrificed in the 1st two books but no one on the winning side had to die this time around. Instead, what were sacrificed were secrets, honor, faiths, laws, and humanity, because, in my opinion, this trilogy was basically a battle between higher reasoning and basic animal instincts and therefore those elements that are the foundation of a civilized society are worthy of sacrifice.

Overall, an excellent series that examine our desires and fears, worthy of a place of honor on your bookshelf.
