A "Gathering Dead" Novella

New York City has fallen to the zombie horde. The greatest city on Earth, once home to millions of Americans, is now firmly in the grasp of the dead.

First Sergeant David Gartrell is cut off and alone in the city, miles away from the nearest military units which might be able to assist. With his ammunition almost depleted, the only thing that stands between him and the stenches are his Special Forces skills, his experience, and his uncompromising desire to avoid being eaten alive!

Together with a frightened woman and her young son, Gartrell sets out to accomplish his final objective: find a way to leave the city of the gathering dead, or perish at the hands--and teeth!--of the ravenous horde.

LEFT WITH THE DEAD is a 33,000 word novella, about 85 pages of high-octane military thriller.

As an avid fan of the hungry living corpse searching for its next terrified victim I have read a lot of zombie books and seen pretty much every good, bad or just plain terrible movie out there. Having said that I tend to drift away from the genre for a period of time as there are only so many variations on the theme. It was after one of these forays back to normal fiction that I found this book and author. Wow! Unrelenting, visceral and well written. The zombies are fantastic, practically unstoppable killing machines even though being brain dead, well mostly... The characters are well rounded and the back story for the commander was a lot more in depth than I generally expect from a novel of this type. That said the author has managed to give you protagonists you want to read about while making the antagonist the focus of the story. You can really feel the terror coming off the page, a rare feature in any book aimed to scare. I think you will be pleasantly surprised when it comes to how the action pans out as well. In most zombie novels, indeed in most horror stories, there is a point or several depending on the author where you yell out "why are you doing that?! Do you want to be eaten!?" For me that got old as a device when Christopher Lee was still Hammering out horror. This is especially jarring when the story is following a trained military force as in this case. Mr Knight has avoided this and it makes the story all the more terrifying for it. Every decision the survivors make is born from necessity driven by the horrific circumstance and does not relent until the finale. I read it in a day then bought two more of his books and they were devoured as quickly as s soldier out of ammo. Anyway! Hyperbole aside, this a must buy for horror fan or not.

A superb spin off from 'The Gathering Dead' novel (which I also enjoyed).

Having an Autistic 7yr old son myself it made for an interesting read, with one of the characters being (until recently) incredibly similar to my boy and I have often wondered (as you do....lol) how we would cope in a world where silence and discretion are what keep you alive.

As with The Gathering Dead which appears to tip more than a wink to the film Land Of The Dead, this has a feel of another recent book to movie in it's climax (but will say no more for fear of spoiling it).

Great stuff and glad to catch up on what happened to David Gartrell as I was gutted at the end of TGD until I saw this was available....... heh heh.

Little or no glaring grammar, punctuation or spelling errors make this an exciting easy read and looking forward to more in this series

Left With The Dead is a MUST if you have read The Gathering Dead.

Considering it was the leaving behind of Cartrell in the final pages of the Gathering Dead that - I'm not ashamed to admit, choked me up, learning that this novella is what happens to him next made this a very quick purchase.
I really hoped I wouldn't have to return to New York after all the effort it took to get out in the first place, but the character Cartell makes it worthwhile. Follows on smoothly from the first book and you're able to catch your breath for the first couple of chapters, but then it's back to the relentless never ending onslaught of getting chased by hungry zombies chaos. There's a bit of heartbreaker scene at the end with a couple of the characters, I'd have liked to get some respite via a Hollywood happy ending, but no, instead I get a punch in the gut that serves to remind me that this business of zombies is no Pixar tale.
I can't fault anything about this series, the easiest five stars I given so far on Amazon.
