Product Description

They play the best football I ve seen from any English side ever, and probably comparable to some of the great teams, like Hungary Malcolm Allison on Leeds United in 1973 The early 1970s was dominated by Leeds United in all domestic competitions; reaching cup finals, winning trophies, topping the league and, in doing so, entertaining fans with a delightful brand of attacking football. Under the watchful eye of legendary commentator and presenter Brian Moore, The Big Match archives have been opened again, allowing fans to reflect on some more of the great games of the era. With club legends throughout the side such as Billy Bremner, Peter Lorimer, Johnny Giles, Allan Clarke and Jack Charlton, to name but a few, teams across the country feared and admired this Leeds United team. Packed with highlights from 19 matches including the a win for the reigning champions in 1969, six matches from the 1970/71 season, plus extended highlights and analysis of victory against Chelsea in the 1973/74 Championship winning season; a match in which Leeds set a post war record of 20 unbeaten games at the start of a season, leading expert analyst Malcolm Allison to declare Leeds United as the greatest ever English team.

The releases in The Big Match series have slowed to a trickle this year so I was delighted to hear the series is continuing.

Highlights of 19 games from The Big Match archives are included here, 13 from the Revie era. Footage of a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge during the 1973/74 takes up a full half hour. This was a significant victory as Leeds broke Liverpool's long standing post war record that day by remaining unbeaten for 20 games since the start of the season. It was also one of just 3 Leeds victories in London captured by the LWT cameras during the show's run from 1968-1983. A 3-2 win at West Ham is on the previous volume. The other was a 2-1 win at Highbury in 1968/69.

There is still enough Leeds footage from The Big Match era to warrant a further release. The Eddie Gray inspired victory over Burnley in 69/70, victory at Anfield in 71/72 and a 2-0 win at Division 2 bound Manchester United in 1973/74 inexplicably haven't been included in either DVD released thus far. One can only hope they are being kept over for Volume 3.

This contains some great 70s action, but is a quick spin off. You get none of the extras that you get on the first set, where Brian Moore and Jimmy Hill provide great entertainment. Also, some annoying editing out ruins some of the best action. Allan Clarke's goal against Leicester is one of the best ever seen at Elland Road but the celebration (with a shirt two sizes too small!) is completely cut. Nevertheless, I enjoyed watching the games and the highlight was Malcolm Allison's assessment of Leeds as the greatest team this country had ever had up to that point. Sadly, Leeds will never be the same again, so watch this while it's still available.
