Hello !

LED LENSER X21-R

I bought this torch about a month ago, having bought 2 of the single CREE-led based P7 'Lenser' torches initiallyt, I wanted something a bit brighter ! The torch comes in a large vac-formed plastic protective case, with a range of accessories, including a shoulder strap (found this to be really handy given the size of the thing and weight) and tripod mounting, if you want to use this with an optinal tripod (more on this later)

What are the key points :

Good:
* Extremely bright crisp white light
* Focussable - very useful when walking dogs in the park and looking for dropped tennis/squeakly balls, thus a money saver, preventing having to buy replacement balls.
* Reasonable battery life - on full power, so far this has lasted around 3 hours. This might improve with more rechahrges, it has only has only had four charges so far.
* Acts as a hand warmer, the head gets warm in use so good for the hands on cold nights if you not wearing gloves
* Good strap - this can be worn over the shoulder and much easier to carry the torch using this (especially when walking two lively young dogs) and means the torch is always to hand!
* Good looking torch - has a 'sci-fi' look from the front :-)
* Nice focus action, easy to use and nicely damped.

Not so good:
* The charger is a strange one - the flashing light on charger simply means it is ready for use. The torch MUST be fully seated in the charger/cradle to line up the charging pins with the torch body. When you have this right, the charging light goes RED, then GREEN when the battery is fully charged. On average the torch takes around an hour to hour and a half to charge up.

I have been a Chartered Surveyor for 30 years and my work demands a strong and reliable torch so I can see into dark corners in roof spaces and under floors! As it's become increasingly difficult to get into roof voids due to the amount of insulation people stuff up there these days (and that's another story!) the need for a really powerful light source has become more pressing. I've had countless torches over the years but this is by far the best. OK the £300 price tag is steep but this is beautifully engineered and as long as I don't drop it from a great height I'm sure it will last me until the end of my career. It's quite heavy but feels really well balanced in the hand and the beam is just like daylight - it floods even the biggest roof void with bright light. My only minor gripe is that at this price it would be nice to get the in-car chargere included but overall a top notch product.

Probably the most powerful torch I've owned. Great for walking dogs, lighting up whole trees, buildings and an amazing zoom focus which blows out all other torches by miles. Wide zoom gives a nice spread of light even in the darkest of locations. Spot zoom is white light. If you get power-cuts, stand the torch in a jug or vase, point to the ceiling and light up the whole room like a film set. Good for several hours on full tilt, or background whole room lighting on half power.
Great switching facility, strobe, SOS, constant (on-off). I have a few of the other smaller LED Lenser torches and they're all good. You get what you pay for. More money, brighter light. Simple.

In terms of the job it does, it's brilliant, staggeringly bright. I'll be able to light and photograph whole cities by day or by night :-) The device is let down by woeful documentation, complex programming, and a really poor quality recharging connection point. The instructions, such as they are, I estimate are written in a 3pt font (my eyes run out at about 6pt).

Regarding what they should have documented, there are two things you need to know:
1. When the charger red light flashes on and off, and the torch is seated in the charger, the torch is NOT charging. It is merely an indicator that the charger is switched on (I don't know of any other charging device that follows this convention). The red light is continuous for 'charging', but only comes on if you have VERY carefully seated the torch in the charger (at my first attempt I waited patiently for 24 hours before starting to suspect it wasn't charging, and only then discovering the meaning of the charger light's behaviour). It was half an hour before I'd finally got the torch to seat on the contact points and begin charging. Predictably, the charger light turns green when the torch is fully charged.
2. You can focus the torch to a fine intense beam by grasping the torch head and pulling it backwards and forwards (i.e. you don't twist it, like other torches).

I couldn't find any reference to the above information in either the instructions or their dismal youtube videos. The videos merely demonstrate that it is big, pretty and bright (we know already, it's 1600 lumens).

The instructions come with impenetrable diagrammatic flow charts, intended to illustrate the various programmable options.
