I have never been a fan of ecclesiastical literature but i was pleasantly surprised and indeed intrigued by the nature of Cardinal Jonh Henry Newmans powerful speeches. This is testimony to his works that an eighteen year old such as myself can be so absorbed by a piece of literature of the religious genre and this work clearly dispels the myth that religion cannot be interesting and engrossing. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Format:Hardcover
You only have to skim the surface of the anti-Catholic material available on the World Wide Web to realise that, though written 150 years ago, Newman's lectures unmasking the shallow intellectual foundations of anti-Catholicism are still highly relevant. This is no period piece, exactly the same calumnies are being pedalled today. Newman, like some current ex-Protestant converts to the Catholic Church, can pinpoint the double standards and shoddy arguments of his Protestant accusers because he was once a convinced Protestant himself.

If you think of theologians as deadly-dull you are in for a surprise. This book reveals Newman as a witty and hard-hitting polemecist -the passages about the fraudulent monk Achilli, which led to a libel trial, are particularly amusing.
