From the Author

Newman's negelected satirical masterpiece
Newman's negelected satirical masterpiece
I am the Editor rather than the Author of this work. If you already know the writings of John Henry Newman (1801-90), you won't need any recommendation from me. These Lectures were Newman's response to the outbreak of anti-catholic agitation which greeted the re-establishment of the Catholic Hierarchy in England in 1850. They are a brilliant analysis and satire of anti-catholic attitudes and are certainly the most humorous of Newman's writings. Yet they have never received the attention they deserve. Here at last is a critical edition, with a lengthy Introduction giving the historical background, an analysis of the Lectures' satire and a review of their critical reception. The Editor's Notes help the reader to understand Newman's references and contemporary parallels, and a Textual Appendix gives all the variant readings between the first and last editions. If you already know Newman, this edition should give you a new appreciation of Newman's satire. And if you've never read any of his works, this is the ideal one to start on. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I have never been a fan of ecclesiastical literature but i was pleasantly surprised and indeed intrigued by the nature of Cardinal Jonh Henry Newmans powerful speeches. This is testimony to his works that an eighteen year old such as myself can be so absorbed by a piece of literature of the religious genre and this work clearly dispels the myth that religion cannot be interesting and engrossing. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

You only have to skim the surface of the anti-Catholic material available on the World Wide Web to realise that, though written 150 years ago, Newman's lectures unmasking the shallow intellectual foundations of anti-Catholicism are still highly relevant. This is no period piece, exactly the same calumnies are being pedalled today. Newman, like some current ex-Protestant converts to the Catholic Church, can pinpoint the double standards and shoddy arguments of his Protestant accusers because he was once a convinced Protestant himself.

If you think of theologians as deadly-dull you are in for a surprise. This book reveals Newman as a witty and hard-hitting polemecist -the passages about the fraudulent monk Achilli, which led to a libel trial, are particularly amusing.
