Elegant and accessible. 4 Jun 2001

This book dicusses Lie groups form a geometric point of view, that is, it covers the topics necessary to understand certain aspects of algebraic topology like characteristic classes. Thus you don't have to have a knowledge of Lie algebras to read this, which is good news for geometers. I highly recommend "Lectures on Lie Groups" to those who interested in the geometry of Lie groups.

Review on "Lectures on Lie groups" by J.F. Adams 22 Oct 2009
By hoember - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent short and straightforward introduction to the theory of Lie groups and their representations from a geometer's viewpoint. It covers the essential concepts to understand the structure of compact Lie groups (the exponential map, maximal tori, Stiefel diagrams) and their representations (linear algebra, real and quaternionic representations, roots and weights). The style of the book is of lecture notes-type hence the book rather should be considered as the first step to understand the basic concepts in their clearest an simplest form. The technical subtleties in the proofs then can be filled in later from other more detailed (however necessary much longer) books on Lie groups.

Format:Paperback
I bought this book on a recommendation, but I wish I hadn't. I tried to use it for an advanced graduate course in Lie groups, but it was not suitable. The books is essentially a list of theorems, with little or no discussion and few examples. At points there seem to be typos in it, or at least lack of clarity.

It is alright as a reference book, but no one should have to use it to learn about Lie groups.
