5.0 out of 5 stars a helpful guide to paediatrics 2 May 2014
By Mr. Stephen Redman VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book (as with a number of Wiley medical texts) comes with on line self-testing as a bonus. The book itself is about 2/3'ds the size of a sheet of A4, and a tightly bound paperback. It is laid out with lots of illustrations, diagrams and colour, in a manner that makes it look interesting.

The structure of the book is almost as a complete set of high quality lecture notes from a comprehensive course on paediatrics.

It begins with a discussion of the health of children and the differences between treating them and adults, going onto the importance of listening to children and their parents and then examining them.

Next comes the issues around the emergency treatment of children what you should be ready for.

There is a whole section dealing with what is normal for a child and what is abnormal, including determining what is and what is not an accident.

The next section deals with specialities and systems, bones, blood, brains, bellies and breathing.

There is a summary of which OSCE stations are covered by this book and a helpful guide to further exams and hurdles in a career towards paediatrics.

This book is concise and helpful, I would thoroughly recommend it.

This book is the latest edition of a book that has an excellent pedigree. It was the main recommended textbook for Paediatrics when I was at Medical School in Leeds over 30 years ago. Its current authors follow in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors, who were both Professors of Paediatrics at Leeds.

The books layout is exceptionally clear. It starts with a very helpful introductory section that explains the symbols that are used for the main features such as a key for key points or a purple box which gives pointers to passing Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs). The tops of the pages in the chapter on Emergency Paediatrics are usefully highlighted in Red so they can easily be found, although this book is more suited to a briefcase than a jacket pocket.

Above all, this is a well written book that is a pleasure to read that informs and entertains students of all ages.

My only minor quibble is the use of a legal style numbering scheme for paragraphs, sub-paragraphs and sub-sub-paragraphs. Thus, History of the Presenting Condition becomes 2.1.3.2. This became the norm for Trust documents in the NHS 15 years ago but has now thankfully disappeared back into oblivion as it adds obfuscation without actually assisting the reader in navigating the text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow ! 5 May 2014
By Duncurin VINE VOICE

This book is an amazing exposition of all things Paediatric. It’s a pleasure to hold; a perfect weight in one’s hands and the gloss/laminate panel that encircles the cover, giving one a sense of delight: more than a hint of the sheer amazement that it contains within.

In truth I have been a firm devotee of the Lecture Notes series since I was a medical student, and volumes such as the Lecture Notes on Clinical Medicine and Surgery, in particular, I am sure, got me through finals. This being said my 3rd edition (!) Lecture Notes on Paediatrics was always something of a disappointment- for whether one intends to be a Paediatrician or not, one cannot, ever, desert this most crucial and important speciality. The book on Paediatrics whilst worthy enough seemed to lack the ‘knock-out’ essence of some of the other titles.

I remember as a young medical student admitting a very poorly young teenager with chickenpox; her life suddenly threatened by a local GP, who for some inexplicable and negligent reason, decided to put her on a course of oral steroids. It brought it home to me just how vital was the study of children, for they could be plunged more quickly than any other group into life-threatening territory, either by a serious condition, or some doctor who was not up to speed.

This book, at a stroke, banishes all the deficiencies I found in my 3rd edition (which I still have!) It is beautifully, succinctly, yet accurately written with precise placing of every word and every fact. There are some excellent illustrations and graphics, with an array of essential information that just keeps on coming.

Part of the lecture notes series which I have found to be excellent study aids in the run up to the million and one exams I have at medical school. This school explores the area of paediatrics covering topics in child health, resuscitation and the all important OSCEs. A great value revision tool which I recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Step up from previous editions. 19 Jun 2014
By Jack Chakotay VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Having had the previous editions, this is a great update, incorporating various changes in resuscitation and a more detailed coverage of child protection. There are obviously changes in texts reflecting the advances in the various subspecialties which makes this a must to stay current. The OSCE section is stand out along with the revision list.

I know that a number of folks who swear by this for the exams, memorising this totally and using various online exam banks to get the "trivia" aspect. The advantages are that you are setting yourself up for the MRCPCh Part 2 practical in the end much better than knowing thick passages of texts.

I have always recommended this and continue to do so for the medical student to the trainee paediatrician.
