Product Description

Review

You've never encountered the music of Jean-Marie Leclair? An internet search will most likely throw up a few fruity factoids concerning this baroque composer's unfortunate, dramatic demise. He was, literally, stabbed in the back. Let us, instead, concentrate on the music. One selling point of this nicely-produced CD is Charles Brink's transverse flute playing, melding flexible agility with a gorgeous range of colours. It's not easy making a flute sound this expressive. Leclair's output is dominated by dance music, in harpsichordist Andrew Appel's words bringing to life the court minuet and gavotte, as well as the barn dance performed by wooden-shoed peasants. --Artdesk,27/07/13

The ensemble give a polished, affectionate reading. --Gramophone. Sept'13

Velvety and sumptuous; the superlative (period) flute is wisely allowed to dominate. Programme notes are likewise agreeable and a pleasure to read.

An oasis in an overly busy world... 16 July 2015
By Robert M. Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Jean-Marie Leclair wrote many works during the first half of the 18th century. I am not a well-trained listener but I think it's fair to say that most listeners these days are, like me, more familiar with the standard baroque or romantic music performed by small ensembles, and played (or, overplayed) in recorded form in venues ranging from big-city elevators, "easy listening" radio stations and polite cocktail parties. This recording of Leclair's work offers something more substantial and fresh. At first the lightness of the rococo touch and the somewhat meandering melody line was hard to get into. I don't know enough about the era to say if this is a French cultural influence, or only Leclair's style, but just when you think the melody is going to land on a major and spring off like a diver on a diving board, it doesn't. Instead, it shifts gears...changes momentum slightly...or shades off into a related key. In these works the flutist (playing a traverso did double duty since Leclair has the flute carry the melody as well as what almost sound like contrapuntal lines. As I listened more, I began to appreciate that what is most important is not the skillful playing of the performers (though there is plenty of that) but rather the mood created by the careful give and take among instruments. In a few words, the mood is elegant, playful, inventive, and refined. In a world that is rushed and filled to the brim with distractions which demand our attention, most of which turn out to be not worthy of our attention, what a pleasure it is to lose yourself in a few minutes of sheer musicality. I will be retreating to this music often! In the spirit of full disclosure, I was given this disc as a gift by one of the performers.
