Not a book for beginners, this is a HUGE encyclopedia listing every possible way to 'submit' an opponent for self-defence, grappling, wrestling or Jiu-Jitsu competition.

Whilst the content is huge, it does not contain detailed descriptions about HOW to set-up the submission holds. Experienced grapplers will have no problem applying the moves, but beginners may be unable to make full use of the book.

Tecniques, techniques and more techniques. This book is an invaluble source of knowledge that the author has to offer. Having unsuccesfully asked numerous stores to order the book, I was more then pleased to finally get hold of the very big book through Amazon UK. Comprehensively illustrated with hundreds of photos and detailed text, some of very uncompromising postitions that you would have problems explaining to mother about if she found you in such postitions with another person (male or female), it is sure to offer an endless source of information for the serious and casual practioner. In addition, the humorous nature of some of the content makes for a very pleasant read and remindingsome of us why we train...for the fun. It costs a bit more then most martial arts books but worth every penny and more. Buy it.

Gene Labell is well respected, having trained with Bruce Lee amongst many others, so I took the plunge and bought his book. For an inexperienced grappler it offers literally encyclopedic knowledge of a vast array of FINISHING holds or submissions. I think working through this book with a partner would equip most with a masterfull variety of techniques.

The book is over 570 pages long and has numerous light hearted insets to lift the tone of the book above the usual boring instruction manual type approach.

However before you buy remember this is an encyclopedia of FINISHING HOLDS, not a standalone encyclopedia of wrestling techniques. Consequently it is not a good introductory to wrestling/groundfighting generally.But you cant fault the book as it clearly states its topic in the title.

I would definatly reccomend the book to anyone interested in grappling/groundwork but remember its about finishing holds NOT grappling generally.
