There aren't many directors with the talent--or nerve--to compose and play the music for their films (although creepmeister John Carpenter comes to mind), and none have done it more artfully than Mike Figgis on Leaving Las Vegas. Though Figgis was nominated for both writing and directing Oscars (and Nicolas Cage won one for Best Actor) for the 1995 film, listening to his subdued, moody jazz (punctuated by vocal standard renditions by Sting and Don Henley) one can't help feeling that his music was unfairly overlooked. Smokey and mournful, it plays against the Vegas musical stereotype by underscoring the loneliness at the heart of Sin City. --Jerry McCulley

Format:Audio CD
Next time you watch the movie, try to imagine it without the music. It's impossible. The music makes the film whereas the stunning tracks and haunting vocals can exist as much on their own as they do an accompaniment to an enchanting film. In other words...BUY IT!! I promise you won't regret it.

An excellent, listenable jazz soundtrack album which stands alone in its own right. This is one of the few OSTs which includes audio clips from the movie for something other than gimmick value. One note of caution - a stand-out track from the movie entitled "Lonely Teardrops" by Michael MacDonald is not included (perhaps for copyright reasons, since it is a (reasonably faithful) cover of a Jackie Wilson track), which may disappoint. I am told this is on an album entitled "Live At The Beacon" but, at the time of writing, I think it is not available in the UK.

I watched this film a few years ago and as much as I found the movie really moving and evocative it was the soundtrack that stayed with me. The music is so elegantly constructed and the tracks by Sting are particularly beautiful, capturing the feelings of hopelessness and despair that are portrayed by the actors. I would recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of anyone from Portishead to Bowie, especially if you are in the mood for contemplation or seduction.

Love the film, love the CD more
I enjoyed the film although got annoyed with Nick Cage`s lifestyle decision - but that was the emotional point of the film and his choice. Fantastic acting too. Read more
