Book Description

14 May 2010
This is the true story of a couple who, when freed from their parental responsibilities, leave their jobs, sell their home, and set off to find a new life in scenic Cornwall. Written in the first person, with unreserved candour and plenty of humour, the author reveals the trials and tribulations of the challenge of establishing a B & B with no previous experience, in a part of the country which considers itself definitely not part of England. Settling in an ancient town where the pace of life is reminiscent of their childhoods, they do their best to offer a five star experience to guests from all over the world in exchange for very little cash. The characters with whom they come into contact throughout are vividly and authentically portrayed, and an indomitable spirit and wonderful sense of humour prevails as their journey into previously uncharted territory progresses. "Leaving England" cannot help but conjure up admiration for this enterprising couple. Precisely and extremely well written, it is a delightfully entertaining and interesting read, containing not only many humorous moments but also some very poignant recollections - the latter being extremely moving and which will no doubt be of especial appeal to the female reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable read 8 Aug 2010
By chrissw
Format:Paperback
How many times have you been on holiday and visited a small town and wondered what it would be like to live there? This book answers this question, along with the fact that the town in question is in Cornwall, where many people consider themselves to be separate from England.

Carole's book is written in the first person- there are many funny moments, but also some sad, all written in a very entertaining and personal way. You meet many interesting characters along the way, many people who stayed with Carole and her husband, Bernie, when they were offering bed and breakfast at their cottage.

I would thoroughly recommend buying this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Leaving England 15 July 2010
Format:Paperback
When Carole's father dies, she and husband Bernie take stock of their life in Northampton and realise, that apart from their jobs, they have nothing to tie them to their way of life. Now is the time to follow their dreams. After many dead ends and unsuitable premises, the arrive in Cornwall. This leads them to pretty St.Columb, where they open a Bed and Breakfast. They have many setbacks, but finally open to the first of their many guests.

The descriptions of the town and the characters who live there, the friends they make, the visitors who stay there and Norman the cat are told with energy and love. Carole and Bernie turn their hands to a variety of skills to make ends meet, gardening, antiques, face painting, meals on wheels to name a few as well as running their B&B. Their life is full of action, ups and downs , fun and happiness. They join in all the fun St. Columb has to offer, parades, auctions, festivals, visiting the pub etc. Will they stay there or follow another dream and really leave England?

An engaging read in a breezy, humerous style.

5.0 out of 5 stars CORNWALL REJOICE! 8 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
St Columb Major will be proud of their former B&B residents. Carole Hert has written a cracking tale; she can paint a picture with words. I couldn't put this book down. I'm hoping for a sequel of their life in Spain ..... and a new batch of interesting characters!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, undemanding read.
I bought this as I had enjoyed the author's previous book about living in Spain. This is an account of running a B&B in Cornwall, and the characters the author meets.
