‘BLUE TOWN PREDICTION: THE END OF THE WORLD...AGAIN’

There's been a prediction that Blue Town will fall into the sea and cease to exist. As a result, many of the locals are overdosing on happy pills and getting drunk on Black Dog beer. The town is increasingly descending into violence. Those with ‘prediction fear’ go to some nearby cliffs where they jump to their deaths.

Flynn is desperate to leave, but the locals think he’s a traitor for doing so. As Flynn’s mind is flooded with childhood memories, he recalls an incident at school when Barry Bulpitt the bully threatened him. ‘One day you’re gonna get it, Flynn. I’m gonna catch you’.

His numbered memories start to attack him and inflict physical pain. The town is not what it appears to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story which resonates 17 Feb 2013
By lupina
Michael Poyser has really put his finger on something here. Leaving Blue Town takes you through a psychological experience which feels incredibly relevant to the experience of contemporary life in a small town. The fear-mongering, the pill-popping, the rumour-mills and the unhinged characters are depicted in a rich, humorous prose which is a pleasure to read. Poyser's psychedelic magical realism explores the protagonists state of mind beautifully and we find ourselves really willing him to escape, not just from the suicidal hysteria of the town and it's violent bully, but also from his own terrifying memory-slips. Both the inner and outer worlds Poyser has created take us on a roller-coaster of desperation, laughter and yearning. This story, and it's narrator's heartfelt, hilarious point of view really resonated with me - as it will do with anyone who has ever felt depressed in a small town.

A friend suggested I try the debut novel by the talented Michael Poyser whom has won accolades, and prizes, for his previously published short stories. "Like a British Houellebecq infused with the wit and warmth of David Nobbs" they said. They weren't wrong.

A fantastic read, full of relatable characters, BIG questions and funnier attempts at answers! If you ever felt frustrated with your home town and were prone to escape the reality of adolescent life with flights of fancy this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great debut 18 Jan 2012
Wow! With more twists and turns than a curly wurly, Mike Poyser's novel fizzes with ideas and characters. Having been recommended this by a friend, I read this in one sitting.

Bouncing effortlessly from cerebal comedy to thought-provoking ideas about existence and memories, Poyser has given us an assured, funny and complicated debut.

If you are a fan of Dan Brown, Tony Parsons or David Nicholls then jog on; this isn't the book for you.

But if you are a fan of Kafka, Swift or Woody Allen then this could be the best 77p you spend this year.

An absurdist classic in the making.
