Product Description

Synopsis

Ever thought of working for yourself? Of course you have - and all the time! This is the book you wished you had ten years ago. For many people, working for themselves is something that they yearn for and dream about. You've worked for other people's companies and been bossed around by terrible bosses for years. The time has now to come to work for the best boss you could have - i.e., yourself. This book is a straight forward, lively guide to the realities of setting up your business, written from first hand experience. Share in the disaster of the author's first sales meeting. Laugh at the attempts to design a marketing flyer, and wince at the pace of learning required to stay one step ahead of clients. Through such experiences, the author reveals the secrets of developing a client base and the skills which will help you through the door to self-employment in all its bare knuckle glory. Working for yourself is one of the richest experiences in life. This practical and inspirational book will put you on the road to success.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish this book had been about 17 years ago. 21 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I wish this book had been about 17 years ago.
This book is fantastic! Personally I believe that if anyone is considering self employment, then DONT! Well at least not until you have bought yourself a copy of this book and read it. `Leave the Bastards Behind' covers areas of self employment that many other books, and so called mentors leave out, it approaches subjects in a very witty, easy to read and understand way, maybe best described as `Laugh and Learn' The book takes you virtually by the hand and step by step gets you to take a look at not only your potential business, but also you, your qualities and skills. The personal planner kit included is a valuable asset it can really help highlight any areas that maybe need more time spent on them.
I have been in business for almost 18 years, paid probably thousands out for courses and reading material, I can honestly say that this book has given me new ideas and also made me think about the way I do things now.
An entertaining book filled with essential information. A must read, whether thinking of self employment... or already established. Written in such a way that you really feel as if the author, Richard Maun.. is your new best friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is fantastic 7 Dec 2010

When I bought this book I couldn't put it down and read it the day I got it.

For anyone looking to start a business, or who is a new business owner, this book gives a real world view of what it's like and what you need to look out for, based on real experience.

Funny, honest and easy to read - this book is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insights on the hard parts of going solo 7 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback
This is a brilliant book. It tackles the really tough human problems involved in working for yourself, and just enough accounts to make you wake up and look at things realistically. The main things I took from it are: how to identify your (business) personality type, how to differentiate yourself, how network to your best advantage, how to listen to people to understand their buying needs, and how to identify the underlying people problems in organisations you deal with.

If you're thinking of setting up in business, there's no excuse to not read this book - it's a focused, entertaining read full of sound principles. I suggest reading this, then following up with Gerald Weinberg's The Secrets of Consulting.
