I've had tones of Leathermans (leathermen?) since they first came on the market in the UK and i presently have three that i use regularly for work: Charge TTI, Sqirt and a Kick, as well as a couple of Waves that i keep for sentimental reasons. All the rest, been given away, sold on or lost etc. Anyway, although i like my Charge i missed using the Wave - there's something about the design that's honest and not too fussy that the Charge misses. So i decided to get a new Wave, but in Black Oxide this time, because it looks a bit more profesional. So i waited a bit til the price was right and snapped one up on Amazon and opted for the free delivery. Two days later it arrived (pretty good) and trying to control my excitement and behave like an adult i carefully opened the package and the yellow n black box. Straight away i was disapointed, it looked really cheap. Worse was to come, it had some major faults. I'll just list them quickly or else this is going to take forever: Main blade's lock didn't lock, there was two large stains on the main blade (i appreciate that BO finish can be variable, but these where really bad), the grind (as in cutting edge) of the main blade was REALLY bad - it was all over the place, the pliers didn't close properly leaving a big gap, the handles didn't close properly, the main screwdriver was really difficult to extract (you had to get another tool to get it out) and once out it wasn't in line with the handles - it pointed outward, the other implements were very stiff, the outer edges on the handle were rough. I contacted Amazon and to their credit they sent out a replacement straight away using first class, before i'd even sent it back. This one looked and felt a lot better, but it still had some of the pretty major faults that the other one had - the main blade's lock didn't deploy properly and the pliers still didn't close fully. Anyway i decided to keep the tool, for one thing, i couldn't be arsed sending it back, and, after washing and re-oiling the tool, i quite liked it despite its faults. You never know they might rectify themselves through usage, If not it's still covered with a 25 year guarantee for these kind of faults. To Conclude, i think, maybe because Leatherman tools are in such high demand, that there quality control measures can't keep up with the shear volume of units. It's a shame because comparing this Wave with my older one (still post 2004) it's quite evident there is a change in quality for the worse.
