It's Not The Size, It's How You Use It, 15 Jun 2008
I started my multi tool usage with a very basic Victorinox swiss army knife when I was 13 and through extra work requirements ended up with a Leatherman Wave Mark 2.
After the pliers snapped they were replaced with the extremely bulky Mark 3 wave (heavy is good, you can use it as a hammer) and realised that the weight of it was rather cumbersome and often frustrating as it would not sit comfortably in my pocket.
I bough the Leatherman Skeletool CX as a result. Though I did not purchase it from Amazon, I feel it does need to be reviewed.
I opted for the more expensive CX, mainly for the serrated section of the blade, but I will admitt that I was "seduced" by the fact that it has a bit made from carbon fibre! Let's be honest, the carbon fibre does bugger all weight wise and only makes it look cool and justifies leatherman creating a £20 dearear black version with a serrated edge.
It looks awesome, something that you would expect to find in James Bond's glove box. It is also at least half the weight of the Mark 3 wave and a lot lightere than the Mark 2 as well.
The Knife is at the insanely sharp leatherman standard (one of my friends ran his finger gently along the blade on his new Wave and sliced it open!) so be very careful! just because it is small doesn't mean it doesn't command your respect. This is a very, very serious piece of kit and you should treat the Skeletool in such a manner.
If the rare occassion that something is a little too tough for the standard edge, the serrated section towards the handle will take it in its stride. Too be honest, the knife is a little shorter than I had hoped for.
The pliers are as usual on a leatherman, standard layout of needle nose, normal plier, wire cutter and the hardened wire cutter. However, I found that the mechanism is extremely stiff and will require a fair bit of use before you have it at your "wrist flick opening" looseness.
I have not used the carabiner/bottle opener yet, but i'm sure it will open basically all bottles well, unlike the Mark 3 Wave which is crap as it is far to narrow. This bottle open is very wide as it is part of the handle so operates like one used in a bar. The carabiner looks rather small and i reckon will only clip onto a belt loop.
As for the belt clip, I'm not sure I would trust my my £80 piece of kit to be dangled off the back of my trousers or the inside of my jacket with it! Though I have not quite worked out how to remove it yet...
The screw driver is really good, used to be very frustrating with have to dig it out on the wave in a hurry. the fact is is also built into the end of the handle means a quick wrist flick (when you loosen it up that is!) will expose your screwdriver. The fact you get 2 philips heads and 2 flat heads is a bonus. Also, unlike the wave, they lock into the socket so they can't fall or accidently be pulled out. However, they are the same buld quality as the Wave Mark 3 philips heads, which if used regularly, become stripped of all shape and cannot unscrew anything!
Overall, a great piece of kit. Just remember to get it serviced by Leatherman regularly so it remains in working order.

Super Skeletool !, 26 Feb 2009
Excellent multitool from leatherman, I have used multitools in my work as an Electrical Engineer for the last 15 years and I have to say that this latest offering from the Leatherman company just has to be the best tool yet ! Excellent wire cutters on the pliers, Razor sharp serrated knife for stripping cables etc & great flat & crosshead screwdrivers which are exactly suited for electrical terminals etc, Some people may think that this is a very sparse or frugal tool , but what is the point of having 40 or 50 totally useless gadgets in a device meant to be clipped onto your belt ! Pliers / cutters , knife , Screwdrivers & of course a bottle opener all combined into a fantastic looking tool, What more could you want !

Superb tool given its light weight, 26 April 2009
I've considered Leatherman's and other multitools in the past, but always held off due to their weight/bulk, as it'll be going in a hydration back pack. This tool seemed refreshingly different in design. I was amazed how comfortable the pliers are in use, if you have big shovel hands then the handles may feel a little short.
It'll get you out of trouble, but the screwdriver isn't that easy to use due to the offset handle shape once the tool is opened. Does come with 2 double ended bits, but I had to knock off a star for the screwdriver ergonomics.
The blade locks with a reassuring click, you know its not going to fold in accidentally when you're leaning on it. Tool feels most comfortable when used as a knife.
