Product Description

Those clever chaps at Leatherman's have outdone themselves again, now pioneering the multi-talented Skeletool CX, a device crammed with an array of handy implements. While multi-tools have multiple options, they're often heavier and include features that are less than useful. Conversely, pocket knives are light and streamlined, but render themselves useless when necessary adjustments call for a tool. Enter the new Skeletool platform: compact size and endless capabilities. This supertool measures a mere 4 inches in length. Weighing in at a tiny 142 grams due to the ingenious mix of stainless steel and carbon fibre, you'll almost forget you're carrying it. And the good news doesn't stop there with Leatherman bestowing a 25 year warranty upon their beloved tools as well. In true Leatherman style, this little gem is not just a pretty face. As well as regular/ needlenose pliers it also boasts a universal bit driver (with various bits and nifty storage in the handle) and a universal wire/ hard wire cutter. Combined with features such as Tungsten DLC coating, a carabiner/ bottle opener and of course an all important removal pocket clip, you'll wonder how you ever survived without it. It's filled with so many juicy titbits that it's bagged itself the National Geographic Adventure magazine 2008 'Gear of the Year Award'.

I am a huge Leatherman fan, and have kept the company going through the recession with my purchases. I have a Skeletool and a Feestyle as well as other Leatherman tools. The Skeletool has an "absurdly sharp" blade, as another reviewer commented, out of the box. It only has a place for two tool bits, but if you really want a tool driver, purchase a Charge. The Skeletool is, to me, an extraordinarily beautiful work of modern art disguised as a tool, and justifies its purchase price for this characteristic alone. I have not put it to any rough work yet, but its build quality seems up to Leatherman's usual magnificant standard. The pliers (pincers in English English) are a bit awkward to use with the tool bit in place. But it is still a stunningly beautiful piece of engineering.

Firstly, I have not seen a multitool out there that looks as awesome as this.
It's got an extremely sharp and strong blade and is comfortable to grip and use. It has been invaluable on outdoor trips wherever I go and I would never leave home without it.

The only little criticism I have is the "carbon fibre" selling point is exaggerating a bit. There is only a very small filler part that is actually made of carbon fibre so although I suppose it takes away a little weight compared to the none CX version, it doesn't make that much difference. Still, the dark colour adds to the visual splendor!

The Skeletool is a good looking tool but i have a number of 'downers' on it for the following reasons.

1). My original tool coating all removed very very easily (standard holding would cause wear). Leatherman replaced this without question however the next one did the same.

2). The blade, whilst of good quality is short. This results in a clean standard section of blade about 1" long before it goes to the serrated portion (also about 1" long). The knife blade is not really suitable for use as a standard blade as the serations always come into play. The serations are not however long enough to use as a serated knife as once again they are only 1" long. It is aso not possible to sharpen the blade without going over the serations (you sharpen the blade whilst damaging the serations!)

3). You will not, i promise this, will not notice the slightly lighter weight of this item over others. You also will not notice that the tool is very slightly smaller.

4). For the very minor weight improvement, and very minor size improvement over standard models you lose a great deal of functionality. Lose 20% weight and mass (maybe) and loose 80% functionality.

If you must buy the skeletool dont buy the CX, that carbon fibre slither and black coating costs a lot over the standard skeletool and the knife blade is a pain to use!
