Good quick start 12 Feb 2012
This is a very solid quick start for Java programming. The tutor gets the message across while keeping "on topic" and the source code comes on the disc. My only complaint is that this does not cover any gui creation or networking concepts - I would definately purchase a follow up DVD should they ever release one.

This isn't a replacement for a book, but this does get you up and running a lot faster that buying a long tome and wading your way through it. What I've learnt over the years is that if you want to program you want to start solving problems quickly and the delve deeper into the language, learning as you go. This gets you coding fast and after 8 hours you can start writing programs for text manipulation and gives you the encouragement and hunger to go on to more complex tasks.
