Product Description

How can you become an effective primary school teacher? What do you need to be able to do? What do you need to know?

Flexible, effective and creative primary school teachers require subject knowledge, an understanding of their pupils and how they learn, a range of strategies for managing behaviour and organising environments for learning, and the ability to respond to dynamic classroom situations.

This second edition of Learning to Teach in the Primary School, fully updated since the introduction of the QTS standards, provides valuable support to trainee teachers during both the taught component and the school placement element of their initial teacher education course. It provides an accessible and engaging introduction to teaching and learning that every student teacher needs to acquire in order to gain Qualified Teacher Status, as well as the underlying theory.

Written by experts in primary school teaching, this edition is divided into 37 units each covering essential concepts and skills, including:

  • approaching planning
  • understanding early years practice NEW
  • assessment for learning
  • e-learning NEW
  • inclusive approaches
  • personalised learning and pupil voice NEW
  • research and further qualifications NEW
  • responding to ethnic diversity and gender differences
  • teaching modern foreign languages NEW
  • the professional standards of teaching
  • working with others.

Each unit offers a range of learning activities for trainee teachers in the form of tasks. Masters Level challenges – new to this edition – and annotated lists of further reading are provided for those who want to explore topics in more detail.

This comprehensive textbook is essential reading for all students training to be primary school teachers, including those on undergraduate teacher training courses (BEd, BA with QTS, BSc with QTS), postgraduate teacher training courses (PGCE, SCITT), and employment-based teacher training courses (GTP, RTP, Teach First), plus those studying Education Studies.

Format:Kindle Edition
I read the reviews of this book and spent some time deciding whether to invest in the kindle edition as it is quite pricey. Although I am very happy with my kindle overall the tables and diagrams in this book a pretty much unreadable. It is quite embarrassing being a teacher and actually having a book where school is spelt incorrectly! I would only recommend buying a hard copy of this book.

Brilliant! 6 Aug 2009

I am due to start a Primary Education Degree in September and I wanted to prepare a bit beforehand so I ordered this book as a friend recommended it. When it arrived I wondered what Id let myself in for as its quite a long book. However, I soon realised by flicking through that it is ideal for dipping in and out of. It makes topics very easy to understand and I knew when I purchased it that I would use it throughout my degree and I have now received my reading list and it is in fact on it! A brilliant buy

A very useful book and well formatted to make it easy-to-read.
The book is broken down into different units which mean you can flick between them to get straight to the info you need.
Information is often backed up by studies or theorists meaning you can use the data/info in essays etc.

This is an excellent read. Unfortunately though, my copy had a page folded over towards the end of the book, and when unfolded I noticed the print was missing. Read more

A very good text book
This book is really very good; the chapters (or units within a section)are small enough to read easily. Each is written by a different expert so they are in a fresh style. Read more
