Product Description

Review

'I believe this book will become a beginning teacher's bible. It bridges the gap created by teaching practice ... and college-based learning ... It will enable students to access information easily, either to develop their own practice or for written assignments.' – TES

Product Description

Learning to Teach Art and Design in the Secondary School advocates art, craft and design as useful, critical, transforming, and therefore fundamental to a plural society. It offers a conceptual and practical framework for understanding the diverse nature of art and design in education at KS3 and the 14-19 curriculum. It provides support and guidance for learning and teaching in art and design, suggesting strategies to motivate and engage pupils in making, discussing and evaluating visual and material culture.
With reference to current debates, Learning to Teach Art and Design in the Secondary School explores a range of approaches to teaching and learning, it raises issues, questions orthodoxies and identifies new directions. The chapters examine:

  • ways of learning
  • planning and resourcing
  • attitudes to making
  • critical studies
  • values and critical pedagogy.

The book is designed to provide underpinning theory and address issues for student teachers on PGCE and initial teacher education courses in Art and Design. It will also be of relevance and value to teachers in school with designated responsibility for supervision.

A small review 18 Nov 2010
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
I found this book quite informative for anyone on PGCE courses or interested in teaching art and design in secondary schools. It explains different styles of teaching using words like didactic and heuristic with some good comprehensive advice about classroom practice. The thing I found annoying though was the use of abbreviated letters in describing various aspects of schools and teaching, SEN, PTE, SoW, TDA. I found I had to keep going back to see what they meant. Apart from that, it was a good book.

Attention beginning Art Education Students 19 Jun 2001
By J Guzman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is very useful in linking teaching theories with Art. If you are a beginning Art Education Student or Art Teacher, this book would be good if you want to learn about pedagogy in the Art classroom. It asks you to analyze and discuss the different approaches to teaching and learning in the Art classroom. This book gives great suggestions for assessment in the Art classroom. It also contains a section on how to get that teaching job you want.
