Can be used in a variety of ways 10 Jun 2007

I purchased this product because I had a kindergarten child I tutored who needed help in developing decoding skills. I thought they would enjoy this as one way of working on decoding skills together. Unfortunately it was too difficult; this child was able to work with the initial consonant tasks but found it draining. However another kindergarten child loved it. She enjoyed using it with me and we talked about the choices she made and what the alternatives would have resulted in (in terms of the words, not the pen noises). I see the value in using it in the gen ed classroom for partner or independent practice with first graders... perhaps as a center. With younger readers or struggling readers I would suggest cooperative work 1:1... same with home use. In other words, depending on the reading ability of the child I would recommend it as a cooperative activity or independent activity, but that it is not for beginners or children still struggling with single letter sounds. It's for kids who are ready for or working with onsets/rimes or word families.
