I've used pattern blocks for years.
In the 70s and 80s there was a massive push towards 'hands on experiential learning'.
Make no mistake these are one of the finest resources a primary teacher can have.
Not just pattern and sorting activities.
I have used then for angles, (so easy to demonstate that an eqilateral triangle has angles of 60 when 3 on em make a straight like.
Enlargement,
double the sides so area is increased.
the list goes on and on.
make no mistake that great wheel of education will come full circle again and the trend to 'rediscover' this type of apparatus will come around.
They also make wonderful patterns too.

We bought these to have fun creating pictures and patterns as part of a fairly informal approach to Early Years "maths". My four year old made some lovely patterns with them and appreciated the bright colours, my 6 year old did pretty much the same but we talked more about which shapes fitted together and why. We also bought the pattern "cards" with pictures to replicate, but these on their own are great and you don't have to be too prescriptive in what the kids do with them. They are made of fairly solid-feeling plastic, not too flimsy and I think they will last us a fair few years.

I bought this tub for several reasons.
1. My son loves doing jigsaw puzzles and I saw this as a variation of that
2. He's learning about colours in nursery
3. He's learning about shapes
4. To entertain him and keep him busy
This learning resource is great and I can see us having lots of fun while learning. I recommend you buy the pattern cards to go with the tub. You get a good amount of pieces in a sturdy tub and all four of my children can sit round the table and use the same tub. I recommend these to any parent of a pre-schooler or even a childminder/nanny
