Product Description

Review

'Anyone who embarks on the difficult journey towards qualified teacher status needs a good guidebook ... Their Companion is a valuable resource ... There is a careful balance ... between the intellectual demands of current educational theory and sound contemporary classroom practice. It is encouraging to note that three of the contributors in the classroom issues section are practising teachers whose case studies and tasks draw on their own experience. The coverage of key issues is carefully structured.' - The Times Educational Supplement

'This very useful book successfully blends theory, history, critical reflection and suggestions for practice ... is intended primarily for students on secondary PGCE courses. However, it will also be useful for mentors, tutors and newly qualified teachers as well as experienced RE practitioners to update them on recent developments across a wide area of subject concerns. Given the financial constraints experienced by many schools ... this text could be a very valuable resource for professional development within a school or a cluster of schools.' - Ian Hartland, RESource, The Journal of the Professional Council for Religious Education

This book takes RE student teachers through from the initial questions to finding a job, step-by-step. The various authors who have contributed compliment each other as they address their specific specialism in RE. All the issues are covered. The book is clearly presented with interesting case studies and tasks to reinforce the points made.

The initial question any students ask is 'why'? This is where the book starts. Gradually each issue is addressed; there are chapters on language, assessment, SEN, KS4 and 16+. There is also a section on wider school discussions such as collective worship and spirituality in school.

The final section covers professional development including getting a suitable post, IT in RE, and further training after qualifying. This book will be useful beyond the initial teacher training course.

This is an extremely useful book for the intended audience (although highly specialist) - the series does include books for the majority of secondary school subjects. This is a must have!!

Invaluable text 8 Aug 2002
Learing to Teach RE in Secondary Schools is proving invaluable to me as I approach the start of my PGCE training. It is well written, informative, easy to digest and comprehend. Covering everything from previous / present legislation to various levels and options for assessment and planning this is an excellent source of information for anyone wanting to teach RE in Secondary Schools. Not only has it developed and expanded my own understanding of the tasks involved, but it also offers a comprehensible, and thorough, explanation of the many areas which I have yet to address. There are references to many other publications, some of which are available to download off the Internet and which will prove invaluable in my quest to teach RE. The book also includes numerous tasks which can be adopted prior to, during and after training. Having read this book I can see me referring to it regularly throughout my training and in the years to come and I would recommend it to anyone!
