Considering that the Quartz Composer software is essentially free with all Apple Macs, it is amazing it has taken this long for a book to emerge to serve this potentially huge user base. Don't be put off by the book's brevity - it also includes a DVD illustrating the examples - and after a few pages you will have your own working examples. I've not finished it yet, but already feel the purchase was worthwhile. One point off for the big publication delay, some spelling mistakes and that a lot of the patches in the library are not covered. But is this for the advanced follow-up? And can someone translate the zugakousaku QC book from Japanese?

Excellent introduction to a little used apple program. 27 July 2012

Let me start by saying I have not worked through the whole book yet, but I am very impressed with this book and DVD. I had downloaded Quartz Composer at least two years ago,but I couldn't do
much with it. I would occasionally poke around looking for documentation and I would open the program and try to produce something with it but with very little success. This book/DVD combination
arrived yesterday by this evening ( a day and a half) I had the start of my first project on the desktop. If you want to learn Quartz Composer, this is what you need. I'd like to be more specific but
as I said,I have just started to work with this. I can say I've gotten farther in a day and a half with this book than I did in the last two years without it. I think this one is a winner.

Amended my Review from 3 to 5 stars 28 Nov. 2013

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I would give this a 4 star rating if Graham would just slow down his presentation re: dvd. This is really "heavy" material to comprehend and he doesn't seem to take this into consideration. I find myself constantly rewinding the dvd and it is quite annoying. That said, this is a very good book/dvd to jumpstart into Quartz Composer Land.
AMENDED REVIEW: 5 STARS ON NOVEMBER 29, 2013: After delving deeper in the BOOK/dvd, I am now giving this book/dvd 5 stars. I have learned more about QC in the past two weeks than the previous three years trying to figure it out myself. The format is somewhat revolutionary in terms of learning compared to 99.9% of other programming-esque dvds/books. Also, its easy to pick-up that this project was a "labor of love". The fact that the authors are artists as well as programming wizards shines throughout. Many Thanks!

Gets you up to speed quickly 7 Sept. 2013

I especially like the use of working examples and video tutorials. You can get quite far by simply watching the videos and following along with the examples, ideally pausing the video and building them yourself. However, the book provides a nice overall framework, telling you when to go watch the videos. I consider this book/videos/software to be a good example of how to most efficiently learn computer-based skills of this nature nowadays. My one bit of advice to the video recorders is to keep them sparse and to the point. We can pause it when we need to stop and think or try something. Only say what is necessary in the video presentation at a uniform pace.
