Product Description

Synopsis
In this guide to C programming, C statements are introduced and explained with the help of simple, but completely working programs. Graded problems are set at the end of each chapter, some with financial or scientific bent, so that users can choose their own level of problem difficulty on which to practice with some additional choice in the preference of the field of application. Full working solutions appear at the back of the book. Chapters 1-3 deal with the basic C statements which control program flow and allow the user to manage with most aspects of the language. Chapter 4-5 introduce the concepts of string arrays, numeric arrays and function subprograms which expand the programming capabilities of the user beyond the beginner's level. Chapter 6 deals entirely with dat-file handling on disc, while chapter 7 deals with unique C structures, both of which should be of interest to all those who need to process large quantities of data.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only book you'll need, 9 Mar 2001
By Glyn (London) - See all my reviews
I bought this book about 8 years ago, as the cheapest C book in the shop.

It won't teach you how to program.

It will teach you how to use C.

I still have it on my desk, and use it whenever I need a quick reference.

1.0 out of 5 stars A poor book that requires a thorough update, 21 Jan 1999
By A Customer
A mistitled book. It should be called "Learning How Not to Program in C". The book contains at least one error per page which for such a small page size is quite impressive. A curious mixture of sample code and description of library functions this book does not inspire confidence. Even the description of standard library functions is often in error, with incorrect return types used or incorrect definitions. Basic C concepts are either omitted or misrepresented: the explanations of the bitwise exclusive or operator and the shift operators are wrong for example. The book promotes the use of scanf() & gets() as suitable user input functions, these are generally held to be totally unsuitable for that purpose. When discussing malloc() and associated functions no mention is made of testing for the possibility of failure and none of the code shows any error checking to that end. On the positive side it is cheap. Not cheap enough or correct enough however to warrant taking it to the cashier. In short this book is to be avoided.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book for learning 'C', 14 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Its only a slim volume so I'll keep this review slim too. It contains everything you need to know to get you started in 'C', presented in a clear and concise format - and it costs next to nothing. Even after 6 years I still occasionaly find myself picking up that little yellow book for reference. Forget K&R et. al., get this.
