5.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Emacs, 3 Oct 2006
By K. Mantell (Winchester, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Learning GNU Emacs: A Guide to the World`s Most Extensible, Customizable Editor (Paperback)
This is a good introduction to Emacs (though not XEmacs) covering all the basics of windows, frames, buffers, text editing, various programming modes. It touches lightly on adapting Emacs via configuration and programming.

To really update Emacs, and to cover things like e-mail, news readers, web-browsing etc. would require a thicker book. I hope that O'Reilly oblige when(if) they update the book when Emacs 22 is released.

Recommended to the beginner or someone coming back to Emacs after a break.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, 20 Aug 1998
By A Customer
But the part on Lisp programming is very bad. Furthermore, it doesn't tell you how to debug a C program, and it doesn't mention xemacs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, badly needs updating, 17 July 2001

This is a fine and informative book, well structured and easy to read. However, the version of Emacs under consideration, 19.29, is some way behind the current release. I'd like any update to cover NT Emacs as well.
