More About the Author

Heather has had the pleasure of coaching and training PAs, secretaries and administrators around the world since 2000; helping them to work more effectively, become an asset to their organisations and develop their careers (www.bakerthompsonassoc.co.uk).

Heather spent over 20 years as a secretary and then PA herself so has "been there and got the T-shirt"!

She is the creator of the BakerWrite speedwriting system (www.bakerwrite.com), which is now also being offered to Pitman Training students. BakerWrite speedwriting can also be learnt online (http://www.bakerthompsonassoc.co.uk/products/bakerwrite-1).

In her minute taking book she shares with her readers her skills and experiences, and those of the hundreds of delegates who've attended her workshops. This book is the basis for the Pitman Training self study programme on minute taking.

Her latest book, "Successful Business Writing", enables her readers to learn how to plan, prepare and express their thoughts in a clear and persuasive way.

Heather has been married to Ian since 1979 and they have two gorgeous daughters, Ailsa and Erin, who now pay them rent!

Review

"I am 51 years old and have been a secretary more or less since I left school. I took the requisite Pitmans shorthand course whilst at school and have never been able to understand it, all those squiggles and lines. I have used my own speed writing version of words through the years and have managed to get by (as long as I dealt with the notes as soon as I had written them and the dictator wasn't too quick - so it was half memory and half being able to read my own shorthand version). But now, everything is so clear and makes complete sense. I take your book on the train every morning and even after the first reading it completely made sense and I could even remember most of what I had read in the first chapter and believe me my memory at retaining new info is not as it used to be. Even when I was reading your abbreviations I was able to see what they were in a lot of cases before I checked the meaning. I am thoroughly enjoying learning a new "skill" from a book that is so simple to understand and I have already started to implement my new dictionary of words when taking notes.
A great big thank you for developing a system that is so easy to understand and completely workable and I looking forward to "showing off" my new skills when taking notes (which I will actually be able to understand) at the next board meeting."
-- Ann, Knightsbridge, London, July 2009

From the Publisher

This book is part of the Easy 4 me 2 Learn series. They are all written by experienced trainers or teachers. The idea is to take the information they provide face to face and to convert that into a learning format that is easy to follow and helps the reader develop the skill. All the books come with lots of exercises, to help you learn the skills. Her background is as a PA for large companies and she realised shorthand is very difficult to learn so she developed this speedwriting system that is very easy to learn and use.

As a PR Officer, and someone who has never studied shorthand before, I attended Heather's one day course at my workplace in order to find a quicker way to take notes during interviews.
This book is presented as an alternative to actually attending the course (or to keep practicing following the course): you are able to progress gradually through each stage of learning, using the space available to practice and build up your own list of key vocabulary relevant to you and your new speed writing alternatives.
Alongside Heather's website, you can also practice your speed writing with dictations.
Anyone who regularly takes notes in meetings, interviews or phone calls would greatly benefit from this easy-to-follow book, which allows you to get started on a speed writing system without having to go to the efforts of learning shorthand. The key is to keep practicing afterwards though!

Easy to follow, lots of common sense 'shorthand' & self tests inside too just to check your progress - a must for note takers. I am using it for my Masters course and have found it invaluable.

Well worth buying as a guide to writing faster. The only negatives are the silly cartoon characters that add nothing to the experience and seem to have been designed for primary school children.

It is a very informative book, easy to read and doesn't use any technical jargon. Exercises were fun and easy, although the dictation is hard to keep up with. It gives you a good base to start with and gives confidence to create your own shorterned words. The delivery was speedy The packaging excellent as it was not overboard and the condition was perfect.

This book is much easier to use than I thought it would be; but make no mistake unless you spend an hour or two reading, and then putting into practice the exercises, you won't get the full benefit. I found the exercises easy to follow and learnt quite quickly as a consequence. My note taking has speeded up significantly and that is thanks in no small part to this excellent book.

The free downloadable dictionary and workbook are worthy accompaniments.

This book is divided into 1 hour chunks of learning and exercises which means even the busiest person can spare time to save time. I've been a secretary for 27 years and still found tips and tricks which I didn't know about. The earlier in your career that you read and learn from this book, the better. I feel it would benefit students at college and university too.
