More About the Author

Hazel Soan was born in Woking, England, grew up in Surrey, and dreamed of being an artist from her teenage years. She launched into her artistic career straight from Art College, taking a bar maiding job at The Plough, in Downside, Cobham, to pay her rent. Within 9 months she had enough commissions from the customers that she could return to the other side of the bar, and an offer of an exhibition at a London Gallery. Hazel now has more than 25 one-woman shows to her credit and an international reputation. She has become one of Britain's most admired watercolourists, well-known through her role as an Art Expert on Channel 4's "Watercolour Challenge" and her Anglia TV series "Splash of Colour". Hazel is the author of 13 painting books and several DVD films, inspiring many with her enthusiasm for watercolour. She has studios in London and Cape Town, Africa has always been a large part of Hazel's inspiration. Her work is held in private and public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, The Ritz Club London, BBC Television, BP Oil, major London hospitals, international hotels, finance houses and a number of Embassies.

What you should know, what you should need, good depth of knowledge needed to use colour, and putting brush to paper. Shows the thinking needed from her experience as a teacher of painting, and the questions beginners or those who know a little bit about this work. She is the best.
I like her relaxed style. If I wanted great detail, I can take a picture by my camera, and hang it up.
I like the idea that a little less detail makes the brain of the viewer work or imagine. It makes the subject more personal.

Once again Hazel ticks all the boxes for me. This book explains colour well and is a good little book for anyone starting out with watercolour.

I'm a fan of Hazel Soan's watercolour paintings which is why I decided to check out her latest book Learn Watercolour Quickly.

I got off to a bad start at the introduction where it says that you can read this book in about 30 minutes. That should give you an idea about how much text and information there are in this 112-page A5-sized hardcover.

This book is actually a very condensed introductory guide that explains what watercolour is. Every topic or technique is just given a one paragraph treatment. Then there's either one or two pictures of some effects (e.g. splatter, wet on wet), followed by a finished painted example. The steps towards creating the final painting is missing.

The information is useful, yes, but they are too short and lacking in depth. I feel that beginners will find it more helpful if there were more hands-on tutorials -- there are only two extremely brief step-by-step demonstrations.

At the end of the book, I suppose you'll know the theory of the various techniques but most likely you won't know how to use them well in practice, or in combination to finish a simple painting.

Yes, I think you can learn some basic watercolour techniques quickly, but definitely not with this book. To learn watercolour so quickly might end up frustrating you instead. For 30 minutes, that's just enough time to learn one of the many techniques. Learn Watercolour Quickly is an introductory guide that could be better with techniques more elaborately demonstrated.

For beginners, I would recommend the more hands-on and practical Watercolour for the Absolute Beginner instead, at around the same price of Hazel Soan's book.

This is a fascinating book on water colour painting and the author certainly knows what she is talking about as the excellent paintings in the book speak for themselves.
There are 6 chapters covering a) what to know about water colours b) equipment needed c) choose the colours d) putting paint on paper e)selecting a subject and f) go for it.
I went for it but was far from successful. I think to be even marginally competent there has to be some artistic flair in you but it is unfortunately not in me.
A first class teaching book that will bring joy to many.

This is one book where I did follow my own advice (I've bought some real rubbish on the web). I saw it in Waterstones and had a good look at it before ordering it online (for half the price). It’s complementary to my other watercolour books by Brenda Swenson and is aimed at a really low level painting structure without too much fine detail. It’s excellent and at just the right level for me. It’s a hard cover book, 20cm by 16cm and has 112 pages. A great little reference.
