Learn Russian Now! 9.0 comes with two CDs, one of which has various key sections--useful "survival phrases", fun activities, conversations and practising speech against the voice of a native speaker. The other CD has a thorough grammar tutorial. This combination is certainly a valuable one for people who are serious about learning a language, and the product is clear and easy to use: in role-plays, phrases are highlighted in a box and their English translations placed underneath, while the voice recognition software allows you to measure your own voice against that of a native speaker and the games hone the things that have been learned. Sections are tailored to various activities, such as getting around, going out and business situations, while at any point you can call up a grammar tutorial that will explain a topic in more detail.

The section on survival phrases will be of much use to those who have already reached a basic level. There are several practice dialogues based on common situations--in the hotel, the bar, the airport, etc.--with some examples that demonstrate a wicked sense of humour. I have found this program useful, up to a point. However, before you buy it, you should realise its limitations. It is definitely not for the beginner as the marketing suggests.

To use this program at all, you need to already be familiar with the Russian alphabet and Russian grammar, which is extremely complicated. The program is not structured in a way to teach these things to you. The program basically provides you with reference manuals on them which you look up on your computer.

After a year of evening classes, I had learnt only a fraction of the grammar I needed to use this program. After the course ended, I carefully took notes on the grammar and learnt the rest of what I needed to know, although this was not an easy task.

Even when you have learnt the grammar rules, the program has limitations. For example, the Vocabulus activity is useless as tool for building vocabulary, because it involves no repetition. Once you get the word right it doesn't ask you the word again to reinforce it in your memory as most vocab learning programs do. So I found by the next time I came across the word I had forgotten it. I resorted to making a checklist of the words I didn't know and then went away and learnt them and then just used Vocabulus to test myself once I though I knew them. However this really does defeat the purpose of having a program.

Where I found the program is useful is that it provides Russian dialogues and sentences where you can click on any word or sentence and have it read out by a native speaker. I also found the pronunciation tool works quite well. However all of this is only really useful for practising Russian once you already quite familiar with the language.

I bought this CD in the hope of following a structured course to learn some basics of Russian using multimedia and games etc. Unfortunately, there is no structure at all to this training. It is akin to trying to learn Russian by watching Russian TV, and reading Russian newspapers. Maybe good for intermediates trying to improve on comprehension, but for a beginner, this software is a no-go I am afraid!
