This book is a great mix of old-style grammatical explanations and cultural hints related to the Romani language. Very well presented, very well analyzed, very comprehensive!
The grammar is based on the one of the Kalderash dialect, the clearest and most widely spoken amongst Romanis all around the world, but the last chapters include information about other dialects as well, and long comparative lists of words to learn the main differences. All this is complemented with a good range of exercises, written and non written, allowing you to practice what you've just learned and to fix in mind all basic concepts.

This book teaches the Kalderash dialect of the Romani language, one of the most diffuse of the language's many dialects. Romani is a most interesting language as apart from the many loanwords which it has assimilated during the course of its speakers' peregrinations it still preserves aspects of its ancient Indian linguistic origins.
Ronald Lee, who is a native speaker of Romani, has addressed his task with great understanding for all would-be students and has simplified learning Romani by carefully explaining grammatical and syntactical terms, so that even those with no background of language learning will soon make progress. It is a book I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone wishing to study this fascinating tongue for whatever reason.

An excellent book to start learning Romani. Progress is really fast because of the way the author has laid out the book. He is a little erratic in places with some of his information - some noun endings vary from page to page and I will have to ask my Roma friends to clarify. It would also be handy if all the vocabulary he uses was included in the vocabulary list at the end of the book instead of being spread throughout the book with only the most common being listed at the end. This is a small gripe, however, as being a language teacher, I find this one of the simplest language books I have ever come across.
