Product Description

Product Description

This book is perfect for the young and not so young who want learning Python to be fun.
Turtle Graphics is a great way to start with Python. Within minutes, you can be typing Python commands and instantly see the effect of those commands on one or more "turtles" that move around the screen, interact with each other and draw colored shapes and patterns. Turtle Graphics is an integral part of the Python language, and the book uses it to explain how to code dialogue with the user, lists and dictionaries, loops, writing and calling functions, reading and writing to external files, game creation, and even draw those dramatic examples of computer art, fractals.
Learning Python through Turtle Graphics is particularly suitable for kids and those who help or teach them because learning to program happens almost without the reader realising it!
The book includes numerous graded exercises. Sample answers are provided in the book and on the companion website at
An important feature of the book's design is the extensive use of hyperlinks. Most of these link to the book's comprehensive glossary. This is no mere two-page 'Jargon Buster'. It is a reference document in its own right containing detailed entries providing the syntax of commands, code examples and further explanations of topics introduced in the chapters.

More About the Author

After spending some years as a physics and astronomy teacher and lecturer, John moved into IT, and now has over 30 years experience as a software developer, trainer and technical author. After breaking free from the rigorous constraints of technical authorship by penning a science fiction novel, he returned to IT with his book 'Learn Python Quickly'. This was written after he ran a Computer App Club at a local college, where he identified a need for an introductory book suitable for students wishing to learn how to do real coding.

In April 2014 he published his second Python book 'Learn Python 3'. This uses Python's Turtle Graphics module to bring Python code to instant life with on-screen 'turtles' that can be controlled by the reader. While still teaching serious Python programming, is great fun for young and not so young learners.

In July 2014 he published a book on a subject that has been dear to his heart since he was 10 - Astronomy. John has been active in astronomical societies since then, is a retired Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and has made many telescopes and designed and built observatories so is ideally qualified to pass on his knowledge and experience to others in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning experience, buy it! 11 April 2014

I didn't realize that learning a computer language could actually be enjoyable! When I see computer code my eyes usually glaze over, but this book kept me riveted. What's good about turtle graphics is that it makes you want to get the turtles to do ever more complicated stuff and as you're doing that, you're learning the language. I particularly liked getting three or four turtles to follow each other round the screen, and the turtle swimming race is brill.

Another thing I like is the glossary. It's HUGE, really easy to use and useful. The author has included loads of links to it from the chapters so if I've forgotten something, I can just click to it. It's like Wikipedia.

I can thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who thought computer coding was dry. It's not.
