Best Book for English Speakers Learning Kurmanji 22 Aug 2011
By E. Story - Published on Amazon.com
This is the best book "available" for English speakers who want to learn Kurmanji. Sadly, it is out of print and very hard to find, making availability something of an issue. I found this book far more useful than A Basic Course in Modern Kurmanji (which sells on Amazon for $12.95.) That book is not really a course in my opinion because it does not include any exercises. The grammatical explanations are also hard to follow. After reading the description of the verb stem system in that book I was about ready to give up on learning the language. Rizgar makes the verb system much more approachable. Learn Kurdish includes many exercises and examples and the companion dictionary is also helpful (although it is a separate book.)

Since the book is out of print and I don't think there is much market for a reprint it's probably not that useful to make suggestions. However, if someone were going to reprint this book it could really use a companion cd. There is no audio component and that puts me in the strange position of being able to read some Kurmanji but not being able to speak it. That doesn't bother me too much, since my main interest is in being able to read the language, but I really wish there was an audio component. Also, there seem to be some errors in the book. I have noticed a few words that seem to be translated incorrectly. (Things like mixing up "teacher" and "student" in an English translation sentence.) I'm sure these are just things that were missed in editing, but it makes me wonder if there are other errors that I don't see because I don't have the skill with the language to recognize them.

I also wish there were more exercises in the section where the verb stem system is introduced. It is still far easier to follow than A Basic Course in Modern Kurmanji, but I wish this section offered more practice.

Another issue I have is that the chapters aren't numbered. If there were going to be a reprint I would like numbered chapters.

Overall, though, this is a great little book and better than I expected. Don't pay too much for it if you can help it. I bought mine on Abebooks for $40.
