How to Use

At the beginning of each chapter, there is text referring to several audio files: a fun audio lesson, a review track and a dialog track.

The Lesson Track is a completely new way to learn German! The core of this new approach is a radio talk show format which is fun, new and entertaining. The Review Track reinforces what you learn in the lesson. Hear the word, repeat it out loud, and then hear the translation. And finally, listen to the Dialog Track while you read the Line-By-Line Transcript.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable way to learn a language 24 Mar 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As well as this Kindle version I also have the almost identical Audible version. I find this version, using both a Kindle for the text and a computer or iPod for the audio files much the easier to use. The lessons move at a comfortably slow speed (for a thicko like me) and are very detailed. Both the German and the American-English diction is admirably clear so your attention to detail should result in an excellent German accent. There is also much information on German and Austrian culture and way of life -- surely important when learning the language. I like the way the careful distinction is made between the 2nd person singular (du) and plural (Sie) forms of the verb, still important in Germany and Austria. Many other German courses teach the singular form first, not much use unless you expect to be speaking all the time to German friends and relations, in which case why buy a language course at all.

Lastly, as someone with no ear for languages and accents, and who studied French for five years using the most appalling and embarrassing French accent (many people will know what I mean) I have found the German accent much easier to attempt and I have even been complimented on it, wow! I look forward to the intermediate course when I have completed this one.

I'm still working through this course but so far I'm enjoying it. The course is quite formal, giving an early grammar lesson but this is the best kind of course for me. I like the way the course compares the structure of German with English. I've tried the ones that give you lots of conversational phrases but without the grammatical foundation and they have been less useful. So it depends on the way you learn. If you like to know why the language is structured in a certain way this course may be for you. If you want the total immersion experience you'll be better off (and considerable poorer) with Rosetta Stone. To get a text book on Kindle plus 25 audio lessons for just over £7 is good value and worth the gamble. One note of caution - the English is spoken by an American but that shouldn't be a reason for not buying it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad 3 Nov 2011

They could have come up with some easier way of obtaining the files, but I think the course itself is not bad. Once you buy the Kindle version here, just follow the instruction in the section 'how to use' to get to the free download of the mp3s. You can have a preview of what the audio is like with this sample: Learn German with Innovative Language's Proven Language System - Level 1: Introduction to German.
As for the course itself, I'm still at the beginning, but it feels ok, even if I chose it mainly because it seems to be the only German for beginners for Kindle that comes with audio. The notes are particularly useful if you, like me, really have no previous knowledge of the language.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheated 24 Sep 2011

I feel cheated. The description led me to think everything was contained in the ebook. Not so. One must go to an external website which will probably require additional fees.
