Synopsis

Book and CD-ROM. Suitable for users of: Visio 2000 Standard Edition; Visio 2000 Technical Edition; Visio 2000 Professional Edition and Visio 2000 Enterprise Edition. This book teaches you how to quickly create a variety of diagrams using this essential office software. Best-selling author Ralph Grabowski uses a tutorial approach to demonstrate how to draw diagrams such as maps, calendars, flowcharts, and business forms. The first chapter presents the fundamentals of Visio 2000, while the remaining chapters focus on specific types of Visio diagrams. Basic and advanced tutorials in each diagramming chapter illustrate the drawing process. Each chapter concludes with a quiz to test your knowledge, and exercises to help you put your new skills to work. The appendices contain a listing of mouse and keyboard shortcuts, and tips on how to improve your productivity with Visio 2000. All of the files used in the tutorials are included on the companion CD-ROM.

Format: Paperback
The book does do what it promises, that is teaches you how to quickly create a variety of diagrams, using simple, easy to follow instructions and numerous pictures.
The first chapter starts off well with an introduction to Visio features but about half of it is explaining how to use standard Windows application features.
The rest of the book is a walk though of the various drawing types and these tutorials do nothing to generalise the information presented into general techniques that can be used in other types of Visio drawings.
There is no or little exploration or explanation of general Visio features (such as layers, even though that are mentioned) and certain instructions are repeated over and over again, such as how to start Visio and how to select a drawing type! It is definitely not a guide on how to use Visio and as a tutorial on how to use the various drawing types it is very very basic. In all, very disappointing and overpriced.

Ten Great Lessons (outdated though) 27 Feb. 2001
By Afia - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book is organized by ten lessons that cover all the things the software is capable of doing - flowcharts, organization charts, network diagrams, Ghantt charts, etc.. Ten chapters, each with a ten question quiz. That makes it different from the other Grabowski books. You learn by doing. And it comes with an excellent CD that has the 18 tutorials and files from the ten chapters. I found this approach worked better than the other books that I've seen. This book also has a large font, plenty of white space, and loads of graphics that are well placed and large enough to see - another difference from some of the other books available. Grabowski's book and CD makes this software easy to learn. If you do the lessons, which will not take much time at all, you can confidently say that you "know" Viseo.

A lot has changed since this book was published. It was useful it its time but I don't recommend it now. Look for newer works by the author.

Not worth the money 23 Aug. 2001
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
No depth to this. Covers several areas such as flowcharts, calendars, office layout, etc. But none to any level of detail that you could be proficient at it. It doesn't even cover some of the pretty basic functions like using styles, or align/distribute shapes--things I think any beginner should learn about. I'd say you're better muddling through Visio's questionable help text than spending money on this.

A quite complete primer. 23 May 2001
By Harland J Hirst Jr - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
A wonderful introduction on using Visio 2000. It is very broad and covers the essentials needed to begin. I started creating my own electrical wiring diagrams within three or four hours of study. I of course wanted "Harland's Guide to Creating WDG's with Visio," and this wasn't it, but I am pleased.

Good tutorial; wish it had more depth. 13 May 2003
By Stuart R. Ainsworth - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book provides a series of step-by-step lessons on how to use Visio 2000. It's not intended to be a technical manual, but rather a hands-on guide to the program. I wish it had a little more meat to it (perhaps two examples instead of the one), but it's an OK buy.
