Thomas the Really Useful Engine is part of LeapFrog's range of interactive books that are designed to be used with their LeapPad Learning System. The pack contains a spiral-bound book and a cartridge. Simply slot both the book and the cartridge into the appropriate areas on the LeapPad and you're ready to start. This title is recommended for children at the LeapStart stage of the LeapPad library, which is children up to five years old.
The story itself centres around a huge rainstorm, which blows through the island of Sodor, causing a tree to crash and break through the station house. Thomas's Friends are sent out to find help and aid in the repair and rescue effort. When they go missing, Thomas braves the raging storm to find them and proves to everyone what a really useful engine he can be.
Fans of Thomas and friends will be comfortable with the bold, bright images that perfectly replicate the characters they know so well from books and TV. The LeapPad comes with a special touch-sensitive pen--follow the story by using it to touch the words on the page. We have been using this for a couple of days now, my son thinks it is fabulous! Although the leap system is very good, it can be slightly patronizing and cheesy. However, this book features the same narrator as the TV show which gave it an enormous amount of credibility with my son. The layout is up to usual leap pad standard and the games are fun. So far this has been one book that has not gone out of favour after a couple of hours!
